What a perfectly ridiculous idea.
Hmm.
6.Feb.2006 9.23pm
i hope the double "ist" ligature counts...

I decided to give the italic a crank...
The 'di' needs some work... a little too swoopy.
But I think the classic 'ct' ligature works well enough.

I think I posted this one to the ether earlier...

There's been a disappointing lack of trash talking lately, so... EAT THIS, SUCKAS!
7.Feb.2006 3.40am
That would be good if you'd used the full name of the beer and not mispelt it and the pr needs kerning.

hmmm, no illustrator at home, but I do have p/shop 6
7.Feb.2006 5.59am
may i ask - being as i know squat - what the difference is between a ligature and the swashes from week 2?
much appreciation...

7.Feb.2006 6.44am
thankye very much mr.Hunt.
now, where can i get cooper black for free as i don't have it?
7.Feb.2006 6.55am
I followed istitch's example and went with a triple-letter ligature... this is one that really should be its own letter, considering its phonetic butchery:
7.Feb.2006 7.18am
I've kept my 'ch' ligature more on the beefy side, tho it lacks the flair of Grant's 'ct'.

then you'll just hafta freehand all your work. >^P (we don't do free)

Picapusher,
You should do your "dg" lig in Cooper for this as well?

Fraktur fonts used to have tz ligs... Bonus for the fa lig?

My way was to use the "text to display" thing at http://www.linotype.com/284/cooperblack-family.html and then alter the image.

7.Feb.2006 12.37pm
Really interesting stuff, all. I'm quite fond of the gh ligs from both Pica and Chris.
And in the spirit of battle, I have to call out the presence of many swashes trying to pass themselves off as ligatures. :)
Now I'd better get to work on mine.
7.Feb.2006 12.50pm
OK Tiff, we no-longer lacka bouma:

7.Feb.2006 12.54pm
In terms of fontellectual property, would it be fair use to post an EPS of the outlines of an alphabet from the font in question so the font-poor among us could still sink their teeth into it?
(and is this maybe a question for a different forum?)
7.Feb.2006 12.55pm
Does it count if it is all one big lig?
ChrisL
7.Feb.2006 12.57pm
That bo is tricky; I read bama. (which is ideal for the crimson tide, but I suspect not what you had in mind)
7.Feb.2006 1.05pm
i'm gonna say that that's not ok to post the outlines.

wwwhat was that?
These are nice guys - I like jujube's ky and there are definite bonus points due for the "k!" as I never would have considered that combo and I even failed to notice that it was a ligature until the third time I looked at it.
But, all your efforts pale against the majusculigatures...
8.Feb.2006 7.55am
I guess I wasn't quick enough on the trigger to get my own "quick" out there first. It is different at least. Amazing how different the same word can be to 2 different people.

8.Feb.2006 4.10pm
Forrest, in order to upload an image you need to have the Flash 8 player installed. You'll then see an "insert image" link below the comment field.
Please upload a B&W PNG, 600px in width.

holy smokes - ligature #2 is gorgeous David.
Sorry, can't trash-talk.
That ga combo... sheesh - this is humbling, but moreover, it is educational/inspirational for me.

Dan, I love the interrobang.
Pica, great AG lig.
So far, Tim's www is my very favorite. Well done. There is something about the pattern Cooper creates, as in this ligature -- chunky, squishy, soft and a quite lovable. Looks a bit like something you could rest on. :)
As I said in the Franklin Gothic Swash battle, I really enjoy seeing those entries which have the potential of working quite well in the existing typeface (which is what I consider to be one of the most important factors in this battle).

Thanks! :-D The only thing I see now that I would change is making the connection on the li lig a bit heavier to match the Black weight of the typeface as a whole. I had some fun with this week's battle...I'm glad I could be educational/inspirational. It's usually the other way around...I haven't even finished school yet! This community is a great place.
There's a lot of other ligs in this thread that are great as well...I can only hope to reach the level of some of the designers here, someday. :-)
8.Feb.2006 5.11pm
WOW! Everybody really went off on this one.
Do these count as vertical ligatures?

8.Feb.2006 5.47pm
Duncan, now add snap and crackle :-)
ChrisL
8.Feb.2006 5.59pm
Hey Duncan, just a tip for ya! When you create ligatures the area of combined strokes should only be as heavy (weight-wise) as a single stroke. Ligature does mean 'joined' but if you look at a standard æ lig it looks like it's just one stroke down the middle that is both the right side of the a glyph and left side of the e glyph. Your ligatures right now for the most part are doubly wide where they join. It draws the eye directly to that part of the combination because it is optically darker than the rest. Take a look at some of the other examples and I think you'll see what I'm saying! :-D Of course I'm no expert, just trying to help!
8.Feb.2006 6.03pm
I figured I'd throw in a few deep south inspired ligatures.

David,
Thanks for the advice. I am on here to learn. I have no formal education in the field of typography, so I welcome any advice that you or anyone else on here has to offer.
Also, Dezcom, thanks for the encouragement.
Here's what I came up with...

I went slightly overboard with my first post here. ;)
I love all the work you've all done in the previous Type Battle!(s), I am wayy out of my league here.
EDIT: Posted image of a different version of the 'ed' ligature
Comments are welcome.
