It's not as far fetched as it sounds - But you would have to be skillful to avoid letting zebrawood overwhelm.

Actually I was just intimidated about the prospect of doing something even roughly based on Garamond… not that Zebrawood isn't skillfully designed, of course. And also, I think I'd have a rough time mixing styles like that. I think I'll leave this to the pros. At least for now.
I hope the pros aren't too busy! I'm curious as to how they'd do this… certainly there's many ways to tackle this and I'm on typophile looking for inspiration! ;P

I might have a god at a word though. If you are feeling intimidated consider looking at Jan Van Krimpens's outlined Roman, and Majoor's decorated Romans ( diamond, pearl etc ). That at least is what I have in mind. Obviously - go a different way if you like!

I didn't know that Jewel collection, it's interesting. But those are all caps too! I was having a hard time visualizing the lowercase for this. But I'm still thinking about it, maybe I won't give up… :P

What about the top of the f? Maybe it could be like the arm of the r. What about dropping the height of the white inside the o on the left side - sort of like it is on the c? I am not sure about the spur on the join on the g. What about pulling the white down further inside the s so it's more like the other letters?

Not so many submissions for this one! Christian's looks great (as usual), and Chipman's raised a chuckle (not so much a love-child as one of those aborted clones out of ‘Alien Resurrection’). I'm hoping to get the time to have a go...

I can't truly call mine an entry, more of an experiment. I didn't really do anything by hand, but I thought the results were interesting. I think Christian crushed this one, especially with his choice to do lower case.

Are you all gonna sit back and just let Christian crush you so easily? Where is the competition?

Nice Jongseong! It's very clearly Garamond and Zebrawood.

Yeah, I think Brian has given Christian a run for the money. Not sure where I come down yet. Christian's nips at the top of his letters are mighty cool. As is the limited use of ornament.... Brian's is no slouch though. It might will by sheer cohesion.

For anyone who is interested I have posted a public beta "Zebramond" here at Betatype. It only supports upper and lower case for now.

It's probably not in the spirit of the battle for me to admire my opponents, but I think Christian's Zebramond is really charming. It kind of reminds me of Kris Sowerby's Hokotohu with its ornamented letterforms, but it also has an organic inked-in quality to it. I can picture it being used on a logotype somewhere.

With my entry, I concentrated too much on combining Garamond's outlines and Zebrawood's internal patterns so that the allusion to each design was as clear as possible. It serves the purpose of this battle, but I doubt it's going to amount to much outside it.

I don't think this breaks any rules at all! Push the envelope.

However, I will call you out on using Garamond outlines :) But if you drew it from scratch as the rules state, then I am clearly wrong. I just want to be the one talking smack.

While I did not modify Garamond outlines directly, I did stick them in the background and retraced them with minimal alteration. So much of that being automated, though, I'm becoming less sure if that counts as drawing from scratch.

If I had the time, though, I would have created a freer variation on the theme like Christian has. If you look closely at my entry's background white, you can see artifacts of combining layers to create the chromatic effect, indicating what a rushed bang-up job it was.

...ah, well, the "from scratch" bit is probably going to trip me up though: must admit I hadn't read the instructions thoroughly enough! Still, this was a bit of a rush-job anyway (what with painting a birthday card for my mum and an ambigram on a mug for a leaving colleague this week I don't feel I've had much creative time left...)

Drew the lower bits of the characters myself though (suppose that comes from actually having Garamond but not Zebrawood)!

Here's an improvement to mine. I deleted the "unadulterated-Garamond" bits from the top, so it's proper "from scratch" as requested now (except possibly the crossbar on the G, now I think of it). Had enough time to add a certain amount of 3D now too. Phew! (Surely "from scratch" should have been in the instructions for battle 22!!!!)

Heh, it looks like a psychadelic circus font now - those fat feet remind me of Crumb's truckin' dudes.

Well Paul, I'm glad you like it! Though I must admit that I slightly cheated. The font I showed were two weights (medium & bold) from 6 of the displayfonts of my graduationproject. These displayfonts are based upon my textface and NOT Garamond.

I just thought, well heck, why not, I've never showed any work on typophile and it fit's in this battle, maybe its time ... but to be honest I think the victory should go to Christian, he did it in the correct timespan.

Good job everyone! So glad to see people coming out of the woodwork to participate. Based on creativity, talent and the ability to follow all the rules, I hereby declare Christian the winner.
