Type Battle 32 // Book Cover Meme

Ngoc Ngo's picture

You will create a book cover, using a fictitious title and an image from the LIFE photo archive.

Winner take all, no holds barred. May the best designer win.

Follow these steps below:

1. The first article title on the Wikipedia Random Articles page
(http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Special:Random) is the title of your book.

2. Go to the LIFE photo archive (http://images.google.com/hosted/life) and enter the title (or part of the title) as your search term. Use any image from the search result for your book.

3. (optional) Include your name as the author of your book.

4. Use your graphics application of choice to throw them together,
and post the result.

- Final Image size: 550 width. 72 dpi*
- Color: Any
- Format: JPG or PNG

*Please try to keep your file sizes to a minimum! Our server is taking quite a beating with all this imagery. So compress, compress compress! Thanks :)

This is your chance to stretch your type muscles on a weekly basis. You have one week to create and submit your entry. Anyone may submit a design response to the challenge. You may enter as often as you wish. Post anytime. Critiques and comments are welcome throughout the game, from participants and spectators alike. Smack talk is encouraged.

As with any street battle, there is no panel of judges and no prize — only the ability to call yourself the best on the block.

So I got "Stack Cake" which is cool because I like that hard "k".
I hope I have done stack cakes the world 'round justice.

Wow Bendy, I really dig the Maya cover!

Bendy's picture

Tee hee :D
i enjoyed doing that one. the original picture was pretty funny though I had to search 'ritual' rather than death or Maya for that one.

Couldn't resist giving this one more go, this time featuring this irresistible Wikipedia Title (it's actually a title from the Duffy series, hee), this irresistible image from Life, and my newest acquisition, the wonderful, and sometimes a little bit scary, Dante.

This page just sounded like a great sci-fi novel.
The image could be improved with reduced glare, but it was the best I could find.

jupiterboy's picture

It's a great song.

I got "Guthrie" as a random Wikithing. This cover looks like something my grandad might have.

Hello, this is my first post, couldn't turn down a book cover challenge . . . !

One more …
I got the song "Aubrey". Since this is by Bread, I put in some bread as well. The other image is from Life (I wish I understood the context there!)

Type is Pivo & Pivo Shadowed and Bauer Bodoni.

It's fun what you can do when you are avoiding doing work.

kitsunenoir pointed the way here, though I wasn't unaware of typophile and it’s brilliance.

Couldn’t resist the terms of this battle, and even less so after getting “bring the pain” from wikipedia, though I had to shorten the LIFE search to just “pain” to get any results.

Fonts are Avenir and Bell MT.

Another quicky. Kind of a post-apocalyptic world with underground city idea. Maybe the people have to go back topside?

I was so intrigued by this challenge, I signed up just to take part ^_^

Anyway, my first go:

Wong Tei Tung (Chinese: 黃地峒, Wong Dei Tong) is an area of Palaeolithic settlement in Hong Kong. It is located near Sham Chung (深涌), beside Three Fathoms Cove of Sai Kung Peninsula.

The findings were discovered by the Hong Kong Archaeological Society.

The title and image together suggested a crime novel set in the 40s or 50s, so I went with it.

Darkshipp, what is the typeface you are using for the title of your 'book'? Very charming...

Okay, here comes my quickie:

DIN (duh!)

Batlock's picture

Strangely addictive. And I got time to kill!

Wiki Link:

Life Photo (Keyword "Office"):

EDIT: Uh, I just saw that it's actually pretty tasteless because in the original photo the man behind the target is Bobby Kennedy. That shows what can happen if you just work away without looking left or right. If it causes any offence feel free to take it down.

deville's picture

I don't want to offend anyone but, but is this a joke? Most of these covers are frigthening at most. Can people apply some self-criticism before posting such atrocities. I know it's question of taste, but some of these covers are just plain awful.

jupiterboy's picture

Name your top-five, most awful and give some constructive crit.

make the cut

Sorry, I do not want to be the troll of the forum, but a cover is not just typography, but also a good sense of composition and colour.

Like Carnival Splendor by Bendy, Artificial Imagination by cdn, Observational Error by Glitch, Kirribilli by Dantho... I just don't know where to start. Do these people acually practise as designers? You can make old fashionied or conservative design but some things are just plain wrong. The type is just slapped on top of the images with absolutely no sensitivity. Something like this discredits you to actually say anything about typography. Unfortunately it's only a reflection of the visual cacophony that plagues any bookshop.

PS I'm a long time lurker, but I just had to say something today.
