Type Battle 41! Five characters, no curves.

Jared Benson's picture

It's Monday, and it's time to bring back a favorite Typophile feature — the Type Battle! What better way to refine your craft, than to get hands-on with it?

This week's battle: Select a five-letter word, and design a set of characters for it with no curves.

Winner take all, no holds barred. May the best designer win.

THIS BATTLE ENDS: Friday, 28 June 2013 — Midnight PST

- Solution must be typographic and contain five letters in upper or lowercase.
- Letters must be custom drawn. No use of existing fonts!
- Image size: 550 width x 400 height. 72 dpi*
- Color: Black and White
- Format: PNG, GIF or JPG (Preferred in that order. Mmake sure there are no spaces in the name)

*Please try to keep your file sizes to a minimum! 50k per file max.

This is your chance to flex your type muscles on a weekly basis. You have one week to create and submit your entry. Anyone may submit a design response to the challenge. You may enter as often as you wish. Post anytime. Critiques and comments are welcome throughout the game, from participants and spectators alike. Smack talk is encouraged.

As with any street battle, there is no panel of judges and no prize — the community decides on merit alone, and you may win the ability to call yourself the best on the block for this challenge.

The perfect reason to make my triumphant return to Typophile!

Maurice Meilleur's picture

Is it kosher to use a face I made last summer? I'm hoping there's an application for this besides just being an example for my type classes (not that that's unimportant):

Cheerfully withdrawn if this entry is out of bounds, but I couldn't resist.

I think mine is a bit ordinary compared to the others.

Probably about 41 minutes of playing... No curves! :-)

@ John:
this reads “fishbone fancier”, I suppose?
very smart!

brianskywalker's picture

No, I'm pretty sure John's says "ogham". Can't you read it? :-)

A goal is a dream with a deadline. Who said it? I can't remember.

I think Napoleon Hill said that.

WOVEN - Woven together by small straight line strokes and a play on the width of each stroke to give the illusion of shading.

With me, there always has to be a story...

I could blame my kids playing Minecraft, but the truth is I've been a pixelmonger for over three decades, so:

Upping The Ante In Three Dimensions:
- No curves? Bah, let's do only horizontal lines.
- The word is about how it looks.
- It's an ambigram.

Boo. Ya.
