What's a parish?

When people think of Louisiana they think of many things including, what the hell is a parish? When I first moved to New Orleans and I overheard people talking about all the different parishes and I was so confused. What is a parish?

New Orleans

When I think of a city I think of the hustle and bustle of the people everyday trying to get to work on time. Then I think of New Orleans and what comes to mind is the excitement of the creativity that just seems to flow through every person in this city. This is obvious by the artwork and architecture of the city. One of my favorite places to look at is Sucre, the dessert shop on Magazine street. Just looking at this place from the outside is amazing. It is one of the most unique designs and brands, I believe, to be in this city.I for one thought that it had to be a chain from some foreign city and I was very much mistaken. It actually was conceptualized by someone who has been in the city of New Orleans for a while and I could not believe it.

Antique Neighborhood

When it comes to down to my neighborhood, I think of antique stores with big letters and fancy script to show age and importance. When you live on a street named Magazine, the fonts better grab the attention of people. It does seem that the boutique shop lined street of Magazine really could be a well layed out print magazine intertwined with restaurants and residential housing. The font on every store window or sign is carefully selected in order to draw people in and that is what amazes me about font and the ability for it to make or break a business or even neighborhood. The power of font is one that most do not realize but as I learn and study more I’ve come to understand, font is just another layer of who you are.

Family

When it comes to fonts that remind me of family, nothing fancy or exciting comes to mind. I tend to picture and see in my mind a typewriter font, as though every certificate and letter from or about my family has been created on a typewriter. I do not see this as a bad thing but I feel it does not inspire or give inspiration. Maybe it is this constant bombardment of plain jane typewriter font that I tend to be okay with plain jane fonts as well or maybe that is the reason why I choose big elaborate fonts to represent me, to be better remembered.

Font is Me

When I think of fonts, I tend to think about the usual fonts we are told to use in college and high school which is Times or Times New Roman. Then after those two, Arial comes to mind. I’ve never really had the opportunity to explore fonts and find the one that I like or fit me. I soon found that no matter what I write it will be in either of those three fonts, but what about if I want something creative and fun?
