In 1928 Jan Tschichold published his now legendary "Die Neue Typografie." I hope Design Writing Research will be remembered likewise.
     Ellen Lupton & J Abbott Miller have created a book, that if you try to understand what they are saying, can change how you work and think. Their clear understanding of theoretical ideas and how to turn those into projects are amazing.
     I wish designers, when they dry out on ideas, turn to a book like this and not to all those coffee-table books. This book will certainly spin your ideas off to a new level, as well as leave you very confused at the same time.
     If you buy it, try to get ahold of the first edition, a hardback from Kiosk Press, with it's excellent McLuhan-image on the front.

Evolutive was an alternative magazine produced in Barcelona by the people behind Vasava Artworks, one of the most innovative design studios in Spain. When they decided to end the project they enrolled guests and friends one last time to contribute work in the same spirit that guided Evolutive, 'the wish to go a little further than we went yesterday.' The result is Evophat, a collection of design, photography, fashion, music, type, illustration, from people like Base, Mike Cina, Leila Mendez, Büro Destruct, Jordi Bernado, Gunnar Knechtel, Typerware, Jørg Richter, and many more.
     Its virtue, eclecticism. Its downfall, inconsistency. A very valuable effort nonetheless.

This book is a concise journey through the typographic styles of the -roughly- first half of the twentieth century. Forty examples illustrating the different periods, namely Arts and Crafts, Art Nouveau, Dadaism, De Stijl, Russian Constructivism, and Bauhaus, all under the Modernism umbrella. And each one annotated and placed in its historical context. Although most of the pieces are not new for anyone interested in Design History, the great quality and the size of the reproductions, together with the amount of related information, make this book stand out among others covering the subject.
     As for myself, just two of the pieces shown, one by Dutch master H. N. Werkman, and another one, a monogram by German designer Walter Dexel, make the book absolutely worthwhile.

What fascinates me most about typography is the sheer amount of meaning contained in a typeface. A quantum hologram, the more you look the more you find.
     No one has looked harder than Chris Burke, here. This is a heavy-duty piece of scholarship written by a type designer. And what a story, putting type design at the centre of world events and contextualizing it with respect to everything: the designer's personal life, his design work and teaching, technology, politics, culture, business, and so on. All the details of Renner's life illuminate Futura, including those that happened many years after he designed it.
     As a type designer, I found reading this to be very empowering, giving great relevance to a geeky, obscure pursuit.
