I reckon I should/one could add another few dozens … :-)
As soon as I started, I realised how futile this had to be. I now rather like Nick’s suggestion (Identifont), or any other compilation that could work as a typeface thesaurus, be it a website feature (like MyFonts’ ‘More Fonts Like This’) or a book (like the famous FontBook, with its numerous crosslinks).

For the first three (at least), one would have to ask: Which one?
They are that old and classic, one can refer to these terms rather as a certain style/stylistic period than a definite typeface. Nevertheless, a few (arbitrary) links.

Didot → Didot Elder, H&FJ Didot, FF Acanthus, Prillwitz
Bodoni → ITC Bodoni, LTC Bodoni 26, …
Clarendon → Egizio, Farao, Clarendon Text, Zalderdash, …
Courier → Courier Sans

Sabon itself is a reinterpretation; Tschichold’s take on Garamond.

Thanks, Typography 101 was really interesting.

Im progressing slowly but wondering if anyone knows of any fonts derived from/ inspired by:

Didot
Clarendon
Bodoni
Joanna
Sabon
Rockwell
Franklin Gothic
Perpetua
Courier
Eurostile

I have now worked out the chronology of the 50 fonts im researching so have decided these older fonts are likely to be the inspiration behind more modern fonts.

BTW, Arial is already “inspired by” Helvetica.

Hi, I’m looking for fonts that were inspired by/ derivatives of older fonts such as Arial, Baskerville, Bembo, Helvetica, Univers for a font encyclopedia kind of book we are writing. can anyone help?
Does anyone know of a website that could tell me?
