If this is indeed a custom typeface, like you questioned/assumed, there may not be any way of ’getting’ it. (But, Slightly modifying ’Memphis’ may get you close enough.)

what is this font. I’m sure they had it made for them but i want to know where i can get it. The ny times is selfish as they don’t tell me.
