Fontographer settings for bitmap 'conversion' (pixelcopying)
I can't for the life of me figure out how to set up fontographer to let me draw an 18 pixel (maximum difference between longest ascending bit and lowest descending bit) font.
Whats the magic formula for the Ascent, Descent, Em Square, for me to be able to draw a 18 pixel tall grid in the Guides layer, that'll let draw pixels into it and then generate 18 pixel bitmaps that are identical? (13 px above the baseline, 5 below).

kinda forgot to mention this is a screen font intended to be viewed only at 18px. whoops.

i dont really want to draw it as a 'true' bitmap font, i just want it to be pixelated and it to be 'faithful' to its pixels at a certain point size.
http://atomicmedia.net/am/make.htmlx is kind of what I'm trying to do, except I'm trying to use a taller more detailed font.
The font has descending parts that reach down to 4 pixels below the baseline, and 13 pixels above it. I might scale the 13 pixel top down to a 12 pixel top, though.
I'm lost with fontographer settings.. It's been a year or two since I've used it seriously. I feel pretty sad for having to ask..

in step 6 at my site, just change the ascent and descent settings to your liking, i.e. ascent=12, descent=4. do everything else the same and it should work out.
oh, and change the bitmap size to 16 point in step 9...

keep the em square at 1000? or up it to 1600.
with a 1600 em square the bitmaps generated looked weird at 16px..

it should be at 1600...when you look at the bitmap (cmd-j in macintosh) do the pixels look bigger or smaller than the outline?

my problem was that i had a 1800 setup (or 1900, i've tried a ton of things) and it rendered as a 1:1 bitmap at size 13, not 18.
my kingdom for a bitmap to fog converter. i'd just draw the damn thing as a bitmap then.

(the 1800 setup ofcourse was 1300 asc /500 desc / 1800 emsq)

well, then i would say that if your ascent was at 12 or 14, and that gives you a 12 or 14 pixel bitmap, go with that...

Does your font require outlines?
There are some free bitmap font editors out
there, but none--that I know of--allow you to
create outlines.
