i know it's currently unavailable, but when will it be available again for public joy?

I've heard this summer. Maybe June. Reprint in the works.

I remember getting a flyer towards the end of last year saying it was going to be sent ut in 'the new year'. So that'll be 2006 then?

I can't even get my hands on a used version. I'm eagerly awaiting this as well.

Update: FontBook is now set to be completed by year's end. We are currently working on much more extensive cross-reference data. Jürgen Siebert of FontShop Germany has been providing FontBook status updates on his blog.

Ok, swallowing my pride here with what is hopefully the last update: FontBook will be ready to ship in August 2006. May angry Typophiles strike me repeatedly with a pica pole if I am wrong again, but this time I have the existence of actual press proofs to back up my estimate.

I'm hoping to have a few copies to show off at TypeCon. For the rest of you unlucky souls who will not be attendance, watch the FontFeed for updates as the shipping date draws near. We'll be describing there some of the changes and improvements in this edition. There are many.

Hi guys. The 2005 edition of FontBook is a completely new book
with fonts not included in the last edition. June may be a little
optimistic, but it should be done this summer. You can send
mail to FontShop to get on the notification list.

Include your name, company name, phone, and postal address.

"FontBook is the only guide that compiles original,
digital typefaces from multiple manufacturers and
presents them in a systematic way" is inaccurate.

drown - It's purchasable now, shippable on Nov. 1.

Hrant - Would you be so kind as to rephrase this statement so that it is accurate?

Would you be so kind as to rephrase this statement so that it is accurate?

And do all the work for you?! ;^)

Seriously, how do I order, by email?

Stephen, you've already done it: the first sentence in the Introduction PDF. Sure, "manufacturer-independent" is clunky, but sometimes the clunk holds things in place. But sorry if I seemed too negative: except for that hiccup (which is easily correctable) it's an amazing, and needed, effort. Kudos.

hhp

What does it cost?

Can't order online yet, Grot. It's coming. Can pre-order via phone, tho.

Hrant - That was Erik's wording. Though I'm still not sure how it's more accurate. Explain?

$99+shipping in US and Canada.

Watch FontBook.com for details soon.

This will be on my Christmas wishlist for sure! Does this come with any bundled typefaces like the Indie FontBooks?

Will it still be around at x-mas...I'm still bitter at the previous edition going out-of-print so quick and fetching $300+ used.

Stephen: the Indie Fonts books, of course.
Which are put out by a font house however.

hhp

I love the Indie Fonts books, but I wouldn't describe their organization as "systematic", in either context. Their order is purely up to each foundry.

Can my reply with contact info be fast-tracked? ;^)

I stopped by at FontShop after work to pick up my copy and it weighs as much as a new-born baby! I'm serious, you could seriously swat an ox with that book.

Seriously, I'm an avid supporter of the IndieFonts Books -- they're simply great in that they present the typefaces by foundry, which allows you to taste the specific style of each one of those foundries. Nevertheless there is a reason why they nicknamed the FontBook The Bible.

What is the upgrade price for those of us who bought the old one just a few months before the new one was announced?

jlt : http://www.hewnandhammered.com : rnrmf!

Bummer. You should've asked Stephen before making the purchase, Joshua -- he knew when it was due.

Hehe. JLT must be JOSHin'. FontBook has been out of print for years.

I'm using my new FB to exercise my bicepses, right now. Canceled the gym… the savings from that will pay for the book in four months. Not bad!

“FontBook is the only guide that compiles original,
digital typefaces from multiple manufacturers and
presents them in a systematic way” is inaccurate.

Except for Myfonts and Identifont.
Myfonts actually shows faces it doesn't sell, and shows full character sets (admittedly it ain't print, but since we're quibbling....)
Also, Fontbook has many faces that are not original but revivals, so the term "original" is redundant.

Thanks Bert. We'll add that to our list of features.

Don't tell Gold's Gym, they may steal all your books :-)

Received mine yesterday. Gorgeous, thick and juicy!

Do not chew FontBook (UK only)

I will have a happy fun ball with my copy though!

Fight the FontBook
Typophiles: meet us in the Haus der Spiekermann!

So Stewf, when I order my copy, will it be autographed by you?

ChrisL

I received my copy the other day. It is big. I certainly won't be taunting it!

Congrats to all who had a hand in producing it. It's a monumental work.

Amazingly rapid progress Stewf :-)

Is a student discount coming? Because I'm going to have to get my aunt Sallie Mae to pay for this one...

Email me if you want my copy of the 2006 FontBook. Haven't decided on a price. I have one to sell.

Thank you, Stephen. If FontBook had a pdf promo poster, I would certainly print it and post it aroound my college. As it is, I'll direct my students (and fellow faculty) to the website It's a terrific resource, and it sounds like this is the best edition in a long time.
