Best of Type-ID (Pssst, Yves)
For a while now I haven’t followed the Type-ID section at all. One reason is that helps me spend less time on Typophile, but another is that I feel inadequate in the company of the planet’s best font hounds! But I have noticed (through the [old] search facility) that some ID threads evolve into quite interesting discussions, ones I’d love to be exposed to. And I suspect a few others are in my position, so I have a suggestion:
Could we have a Best of Type-ID compilation? It would include threads with juicy discussion but also exceptional cases of font sleuthing, and maybe great humor, etc. Assuming Yves is willing to spend any time on something like this, what would reduce his load a lot would be if people (especially the pack of alpha hounds*) nominated memorable threads, or even divvied up chronological chunks** of all the ID threads and went through them. It could be a long-term thing, as people have the time.
* In fact one of the alphas could be the project kahuna instead of Yves.
** You could give me a chunk too.

Oh but I already have some classics singled out. Wanna know which? ;-)

Hey what’s that winkie for? Well duh I’d like to know!! :-)

I badly need to go to sleep — I must learn to just turn off the computer instead of doing a last quick check on Typophile. :-/ I’ll post some juicy stuff tomorrow. Here’s a little teaser:
Jared explains the contents of Stephen’s brain.
Hrant pulls off the first one minute ID ever.
Mark Simonson teaches us how to identify movie credits in movie theatres.
Yves identifies Adobe Sans and fries a few synapses in the process.
There’s more where that came from... :-D

Here’s another one:
Mike Yanega’s 12-step Program for Fontaholics Anonymous and subsequent add-ons.
As the Archives are still a tad unreliable I fear it’s going to be harder than expected to find stuff.

Great stuff Yves! Thanks. Whenever you (or anybody else) has time to add more, that’s be great - no pressure though.

Mark Simonsons discussion about Flairs on typefaces was a hoot. Courier flair anyone.
3.Jun.2005 1.51pm
It sure was. Please make sure to skip the embarassing “amateurs with PCs” middle part and keep on scrolling till you hit some pretty disturbing Frankenstein-like type samples. There are but so many curly bits a typographer can stomach in one sitting. :-)

This is all so funny and hilarious, too band I have to laugh alone, my work pal isn´t presicely a type fond designer.
I was about to throw my stomach out of laugh after the swashes and flairs horror gallery.

Don’t we need a Surgeon’s General Warning for this thread? I’m starting to wonder ...
6.Jun.2005 7.33am
Just remembered this one:
Stephen, Chesh and Yves get on a first name basis, and BJ thinks they should get a room. With the chicken.
Unfortunately I can’t seem to find the first mention of the infamous Step Hen (the chicken) which makes it funnier. Maybe I should’ve waited with posting until I found that one. :-/
Also, it seems like a lot of threads didn’t make it to the new version, and those that did are missing Stephen’s comments for some obscure reason...
6.Jun.2005 8.19am
All my posts pre-Typophile 2.0 are missing from the current site. Whether the forum convertor choked on their sheer quantity or the piles of BS is up to debate. Hrant’s survived, however. Hmm...

> the first mention of the infamous Step Hen
That was me. But I think I intercapped it -“StepHen”- and that makes it harder to find? So maybe try searching on “stephen” + “hhp” from around 2.5 years ago. Or maybe it was “Step-Hen”, since I love hyphens to much.
Missing stuff: my guess is the system processed mine, then it needed a vacation. Seriously, I’ve noticed that posts from anonymous users for one seem to be missing; but that doesn’t explain Stephen’s missing stuff. Maybe it has to do with having multiple login accounts? I’ve always had this one, but I remember early on (like maybe 3.5 years ago) there was some sort of purge and most people created new accounts (thereby exagerating my [relative] post-count even more...) and maybe the system only revives posts of currently registered users?

Whatever it is, I sure do miss Stewf’s zany comments and barely controlled insanity intermixed with erudite knowledge and zen-like sensei advice. :-/
(This can’t be proper English, but what the heck!)

Hrant (Yves already knows this) as a moderator Yves can promote a thread to the home page to appear in the “Handpicked” column. That would be a great way to push the good ones to the surface.
___
Stephen, the moderator posts were not properly batch processed along with all the rest of the users’ info and posts. The same thing happened to Tiffany. (The people responsible have been sacked and those responsible for sacking them have also been sacked.) We’re assured that Step Hen is not forever lost...
7.Jun.2005 12.42pm
Like, is there anyone at all left at Punchcut after all this sacking!? :-D
7.Jun.2005 1.58pm
Only the Step Hen, apparently?
7.Jun.2005 6.14pm
Definitely the one where everyone started posting type jokes! That should definitely be a one of the “best of”.
And remember the one where Armin had a funny freudian dream about Hrant?
7.Jun.2005 6.15pm
Oops, those were from the General Discussions though.
7.Jun.2005 6.39pm
Let it now be duly recorded that the plunger in question (my actual personal plunger until that point in time) was gifted to Armin onstage at TypeCon 2004.

You’re kidding, right?
7.Jun.2005 8.01pm
Nope. I did rinse it though. BTW, shortly afterwards Bryony
grinned to me ominously and said: “Oh, this can’t stop here.”
Which is, of course, why I’ll be skipping TypeCon this year.

You’re kidding, right?
It happened on stage during one of the presentations. There were several hundred witnesses. I was there. It got a big laugh, but I’m sure some people didn’t know what the joke was about.
8.Jun.2005 8.22am
It must’ve been super surreal. Armin must have been wondering, “What the hell am I supposed to do with this?”
8.Jun.2005 9.13am
Actually, he didn’t skip a beat.
Which isn’t to say his mind wasn’t racing with the possibilities.

Back on track — looks like the Cereal Box Incident might make it in the list. :-)
And what do you people think of the Alien Porn Occurence?
You’ll have to excuse me for remembering mine more easily. Anyone else feels like adding to the list? I feel like the first guy on the dancefloor, nervously checking the onlookers and hoping somebody would join in so I’d feel less naked and silly
8.Jun.2005 10.24pm
I’ll nominate Yves’ 5000th post. The visual humor in this forum is just great. The Mondrian in the gilded frame is another one of my favorites, from the infamous Flairs thread, already mentioned above.
