ITC Avant Garde Gothic Alternates and Avant Garde

Can someone please explian how these typefaces are supposed to be used together.
I have ITC Avant Garde Gothic Alternates and ITC Avant Garde Gothic and yet they are different sizes and weights (and look fantastically ugly).

Any pointers?

From where did you license the fonts? Sounds like they probably came from different foundries.

ITC Avant Garde Gothic Std - from Adobe
ITC Avant Garde Gothic Alternates - Fontshop

I do have older versions of ITC Avant Garde Gothic but alas the same problem.

Does anyone know which versions do work together.

FontShop carries Avant Garde Gothic from three vendors. Pictured (welcome back Typophile image upload!) are all three versions of “Avant Garde Gothic Book” rendered at 40pt. Note that the E+F and ITC versions are identical in size, weight and spacing, whereas the Monotype version differs quite a bit. At bottom is the Avant Garde Gothic Alternates by Scangraphic (now owned by E+F). It matches the E+F and ITC versions perfectly.

Newbie question:

I’m ready to make a couple avant purchases here, and am just wondering what you all think about TTF vs Postscript on these. (were they converted from postscript to TTF or vice verse, etc)...

Even more newbie question:
I see that there is a postscript PC and a postscript MAC for sale...shouldn’t a PC postscript work fine on a Mac?

Any help greatly appreciated. I’ve been doing variations of these letters by hand in Illustrator for too long.
