Type ID Pop Quiz V2.0.2
This is how it works:
- A portion of a glyph is published in the Type ID Pop Quiz.
- Try to identify the glyph and the typeface. To win, you need to name at least:
- typeface
- weight
- character/glyph
- Show off your knowledge by casually mentioning additional trivia, like who designed it, when and by whom was it (first) published, and other cool stuff to impress your fellow Typophiles with.
- The winner produces a new challenge — a portion of a glyph, black on white background, presented in a 288 x 288 pixel square, including a R204G000B00 1 pixel border.
- The person who posts a challenge can’t win the next game.
In case of any disputes, I will act as judge, jury and avenging angel of wrath.
Good luck everyone, and have fun. ;^)
With respectful thanks to the originator of this utterly useless but highly entertaining waste of time, the often imitated but never duplicated Cheshire Dave.

30.Dec.2005 6.03am
New challenge in a fresh thread:
Show me what you’re made of! :^)
30.Dec.2005 8.10am
g from Voice by Hubert Jocham
30.Dec.2005 8.11am
Voice edg Regular I think.
30.Dec.2005 10.19am
don’t you think this g is just adorable? reminds me of a little ant for some reason.
30.Dec.2005 1.33pm
Aw c’mon, was it so easy!? Damn! :^D
30.Dec.2005 2.44pm
It’s mine turn isn’t it? Because I’m not able to answers questions the next few days, I will post a portion of a glyph and will send the name of the typeface etc to Yves (if that’s no problem) so he can answer the questions about the glyph. Alright?
30.Dec.2005 2.57pm
Next challenge:
30.Dec.2005 3.01pm
lowercase u
30.Dec.2005 3.08pm
Wrong glyph.
31.Dec.2005 12.58am
d?
31.Dec.2005 4.15am
Correct glyph, but you’ll need to give me more than that! :^D
1.Jan.2006 3.34am
I’ve been doing so poorly at this game lately, I’ll settle for just getting the glyph right. Baby steps, you know.
2.Jan.2006 10.10am
My side of the Atlantic.
3.Jan.2006 6.54am
Lower case d Fresco Sans Bold (serie Fresco Sans 3)
4.Jan.2006 12.53am
Yup. :^)
4.Jan.2006 10.20am
Here the new one
4.Jan.2006 10.22am
Lowercase ’h’ with a big trap. :-)
4.Jan.2006 10.30am
It’s a lowercase h, but I would say it’s more a part of the design than a trap.
4.Jan.2006 11.30am
Looks like type designers are getting a little X-Acto-happy on their fonts these days...
5.Jan.2006 5.34am
Clue: this french type designer lives in the French Alps and has started his own typefoundry.
5.Jan.2006 10.21am
It’s Alinea Serif by Thierry Puyfoulhoux of Présence Typo.
5.Jan.2006 1.07pm
Right on Lauri! Is the clue was helpfull?
5.Jan.2006 2.22pm
Andre,
I wouldn’t have got it without the clue. I found out about Présence Typo on Google, and I looked through all the fonts on the site, but didn’t see anything that matched the sample, but many of the h’s had the same notch so I knew I had the right designer, so I checked other sites to see if he had designed any more fonts and came across Alinea Serif. You’re right about it not being a trap!
I’ll have a new challenge ready in a couple of hours.
5.Jan.2006 7.17pm
Here’s a new challenge:
5.Jan.2006 7.18pm
lc b or h
5.Jan.2006 7.40pm
David,
Neither lc b nor h.
6.Jan.2006 2.55pm
Cap G?
6.Jan.2006 2.56pm
Or 6?
6.Jan.2006 3.39pm
Nick,
Number 6 it is! :-)
8.Jan.2006 9.32am
Is it Ambroise ?
8.Jan.2006 5.58pm
No, not Ambroise.
8.Jan.2006 5.59pm
Hint #1: Released in 1992 and based on a much older face.
8.Jan.2006 10.50pm
FB Skyline Bold Condensed, by Jane Patterson, based on Imre Reiner’s Corvinus.
9.Jan.2006 12.05am
Dave,
You’re correct... great job! :-)
You’re next!
9.Jan.2006 4.05am
I wonder if Chesh will post the new challenge before or on his birthday? :^)
9.Jan.2006 10.24am
Everybody and their grandma have birthdays these days... ;-)
9.Jan.2006 10.35am
Couldn’t have done it without the clue, but it sure is nice to finally win this game again!
OK, hope this one isn’t too easy...
9.Jan.2006 11.24am
dalliance. but i can’t find the bleepin’ glyph. :^(
9.Jan.2006 11.28am
Glyph ID 86 | Unicode: U+0055 | Latin Capital Letter U | Dalliance Roman Ligatures
9.Jan.2006 11.29am
Is this a ligature?
9.Jan.2006 11.32am
I’d say it is more of an alternate for a lowercase _t_
9.Jan.2006 11.37am
That sounds right too...some sort of looping crossbar that comes back over the stem?
9.Jan.2006 11.40am
Yeah. Crazy line-ending terminus swash. Or something like that. :^/
9.Jan.2006 11.52am
Yep, one of the finial t’s from Dalliance Roman Ligatures. Go Tiff!
9.Jan.2006 12.00pm
:^) What a great way to cheer up.
9.Jan.2006 8.36pm
Hint: This typeface prefers a Mediterranean climate.
10.Jan.2006 10.43pm
Wow, this has got everyone totally stumped! I haven’t found the font yet, but I’ll guess the glyph is a ’u’.
11.Jan.2006 1.32pm
It’s not Lisboa, is it?
11.Jan.2006 4.22pm
Sorry. Forgot about this. No to both guesses. This typeface is a somewhat friendly and horsey 19th century fellow.
12.Jan.2006 7.11am
Could the glyph be “µ” ?
12.Jan.2006 1.29pm
Claire, yes that is right.
12.Jan.2006 1.46pm
Is the glyph a hint that this is a microscopic font?
12.Jan.2006 1.50pm
nope
16.Jan.2006 9.23pm
I’m prevented from guessing, but for the sake of others I think we’re gonna need another hint.
18.Jan.2006 9.13pm
Ok. This is bad I’ve completely forgotten about this twice now. The glyph guessed was correct. I will post another glyph tomorrow. :^/ This is a difficult one and I probably will get my wrists slapped for it. My bad.
19.Jan.2006 7.08am
Another glyph would be a good idea. :^)
19.Jan.2006 11.11am
Ok. Same typeface, new glyph. Sorry, Yves. I know this isn’t what you want. I will resolve from henceforth to not use typefaces that come bundled with other software. :^/
20.Jan.2006 11.11am
CMD-Z.
All apologies. I will not post such difficult typefaces.
Let’s start over.
21.Jan.2006 8.15am
It’s Carol Twombly’s Chaparral (the glyph is K and the weight Regular, I guess).
21.Jan.2006 8.32am
Weird. Yves, did you nullify my undo? :^/
Celeste, congratulations! Your turn.
21.Jan.2006 8.56am
Erm… I know this sounds ridiculous — the image is ready, but how do I publish it in my post ? Help !
21.Jan.2006 1.06pm
Hmm… I guess this still doesn’t work — I’m afraid I’m killing this thread.
Sorry, everyone.
21.Jan.2006 4.20pm
Celeste what is the format of your image? If I didn’t kill it with my “way too difficult” typeface then you won’t.
22.Jan.2006 2.46am
I made it a .GIF picture, but I can change it if necessary. Any suggestion ?
22.Jan.2006 2.02pm
Do you use PC or Mac system?
22.Jan.2006 2.20pm
Celeste, contact me through my profile.
23.Jan.2006 3.22am
OK I finally made it (at last !). Thanks, Yves.
Here it is.
23.Jan.2006 4.06am
Hey, that’s an interesting one! I’d say it’s a lowercase “e”, and that sharp finial does ring a bell.
think think think think think think think think think think think think think think ...
23.Jan.2006 4.09am
Correct glyph — a hint : geographically speaking, you’re close.
24.Jan.2006 1.08pm
Beaufort Heavy, perhaps?
24.Jan.2006 1.20pm
I’m afraid it is not — Beaufort looks narrower to me (this one’s curves are not steep enough, I think). Nice try, anyway.
1.Feb.2006 11.11am
any more clues???
1.Feb.2006 12.35pm
You really have me thinking Arnhem Fine Bold but it’s not quite there. Is there another weight/style I’m not aware of?
2.Feb.2006 4.10am
Andy, you’re getting pretty close (at least from a geographical point of view), but this one is definitely fatter.
13.Feb.2006 2.31pm
Houston, I think we have a problem. We need a hint, because this is going nowhere. :^)
13.Feb.2006 3.44pm
The designer of this typeface was inpsired by bottle openers. =^P
13.Feb.2006 3.46pm
I’ll guess the designer is under 35 years old. Even under 30.
14.Feb.2006 11.53am
is there a link between bottle openers and a designer under 35 years old?
14.Feb.2006 4.47pm
Oops — sorry everyone, I let you down on this one.
OK, this is a hint — not inspired by bottle openers, but more likely by gardening tools used to grow organic vegetables.
And Yves — my name is Stéphane, not “Houston”. =8-)
16.Feb.2006 12.35am
And as I’m quite a generous fellow, here’s another glyph — same typeface, same weight.
27.Feb.2006 7.52am
Ahh, organic vegetables, it must be Bram de Does, Lexicon.
27.Feb.2006 12.50pm
Well done, Andy. It was actually a lower-case e and a 3 in Lexicon No1 RomanF (one of the most exquisite and dynamic ExtraBold weight ever designed for a serif typeface, to my opinion).
Your turn.
28.Feb.2006 9.40pm
Great! Let’s see what you think of this:
1.Mar.2006 12.52am
Uppercase G?
1.Mar.2006 7.28am
Correct
2.Mar.2006 11.13am
Category «Incise»
6.Mar.2006 6.14am
Hmm, maybe another hint? Here’s another glyph:
8.Mar.2006 9.50pm
Lowercase ’a’ ???
9.Mar.2006 7.13am
Yep, that’s correct.
10.Mar.2006 2.42pm
Times New Roman?
:^)
11.Mar.2006 12.06pm
I think it’s one of those typefaces where the uppercase has a Trajanesque structure.
12.Mar.2006 11.13am
Okay, another cap:
12.Mar.2006 11.18am
’Versa’, by Peter Verheul / OurType.
( ’G’, ’a’, R’; ’Versa’; Peter Verheul; OurType; Belgium; Europe. :)
Dav
12.Mar.2006 11.34am
Belgium!? The Netherlands you mean! :^)
A winner is you!
12.Mar.2006 11.46am
Sure, Verheul = The Netherlands, OurType = Belgium, is what I meant. :)
( Ill post my ’challenge’ within the next minutes. )

13.Mar.2006 1.11am
Lowercase a, Bunker Regular by Eduardo Omine
13.Mar.2006 2.47am
It sure is. Nicely done.
You ’serve’. :)
Dav
13.Mar.2006 3.10am
OK, here’s a new one. A bit tricky, but what shapes !
13.Mar.2006 7.54am
Whoa! Nice one, Stéphane!
13.Mar.2006 9.19am
hmm ... ligature. second character is a lowercase y?
13.Mar.2006 10.41am
The guess is correct, Miss Tiffany. Any idea about the first one ?
16.Mar.2006 8.13pm
I guess the first one is the uppercase C or Y.
17.Mar.2006 9.33am
Sorry, but it is neither — a Yy ligature ? Does this really exist ?
17.Mar.2006 3.12pm
Maybe “ry” or “ly”?
- Lex
18.Mar.2006 4.08am
It’s definitely ry. Congratulations, Lex — but this was the easy part. What now ?
30.Mar.2006 9.26am
Trying this again...
30.Mar.2006 3.20pm
Carey,
I think you’ve posted your image in the wrong thread. If you’re looking for an ID, start a new thread.
The small text is House Chalet Paris 1960.
- Lex
4.Apr.2006 2.40pm
Wake up, everyone !
Is this one REALLY tricky ? It’s been ages since someone posted a comment here…
OK, here’s a hint : this typeface is named after an old town in Portugal — I never found out exactly why, though.
4.Apr.2006 3.13pm
Hmm. This one is really really really difficult. I thought it was Brioso, but it doesn’t match.
4.Apr.2006 3.30pm
It’s not a “Pro” typeface — there are only very few ligatures (apart from the compulsory fi and fl) and a handful of alternates.
It was made available only in Light and Regular weights.
5.Apr.2006 7.02am
Hmm. Old town in Portugal? In the North, Centre or South? And is it the town’s present name or its ancient (Roman) name?
For example, the city of Oporto (Porto in Portuguese) used to be call Portus Cale, and that’s where the name of the country came from. This page shows a list of old Roman names of Portuguese cities. (Nice suggestions for names of new typefaces ;^)
Anyway, is the town’s name present on that list?
6.Apr.2006 10.11am
Miguel — to my knowledge it’s located in the north of Portugal and the name of the typeface hints at the town’s present name. And no, it’s not on your list.
6.Apr.2006 4.52pm
Alright guys, this can’t be that difficult. Can anyone spot a typeface?
http://www.home.zonnet.nl/aslavradeiras/portugal-mapa.jpg
7.Apr.2006 5.01am
ITC Braganza
Nick Cooke
7.Apr.2006 5.51am
Looks like you got it Nick. Congratulations!
http://www.myfonts.com/fonts/linotype/itc-braganza/braganza-itc/mac-t1/2...
I had never noticed how nice this face is. Regarding the name, from MyFonts:
ITC Braganza is the work of British designer Phill Grimshaw, an elegant typeface steeped in historical inspiration. Reminiscent of the handwritten manuscript styles of the 16th century, the name Braganza refers to Catherine, Duchess of Braganza, who was a prominent figure in Portugal at the time. The vertical script style displays the elegance and refinement which distinguished the Royal Courts of the 16th century.
I’d like to add that Catarina de Bragança was responsible for one thing the Brits are known for: teatime http://www.bbc.co.uk/dna/h2g2/A2998461
7.Apr.2006 6.06am
Got one at last! I’m quite elated.
Well Miguel, it was your map that helped – thanks!
BTW, I will not be able to post a new image for a while, (presuming confirmation!)– I’m not one of those saddos who takes a laptop travelling, so Happy Easter everybody.
Nick Cooke
12.Apr.2006 6.07pm
I just found the Bonnie Brown face - it’s Motter Tektura. And I think my ID of Chalet was mistaken. It’s probably just Helvetica.
- Lex
Back to the Pop Quiz...
14.Apr.2006 5.09am
It was definitely ITC Braganza Regular, by the late great Phill Grimshaw. Congratulations, Nick. We’re waiting for your next challenge.
21.Apr.2006 3.29am
OK, here goes.
Nick Cooke
21.Apr.2006 4.46am
Aesc bold italic
21.Apr.2006 5.01am
That’s the easy bit out of the way – now which typeface?
And not bold italic BTW.
Nick Cooke
22.Apr.2006 2.40pm
Nick, next time remember to save your sample as RGB — Firefox doesn’t like it. ;^)
25.Apr.2006 9.19am
No takers? Anybody out there?.
How about this?
25.Apr.2006 9.49am
Is your most recent glyph is in the same typeface as the Asec you’ve posted?
25.Apr.2006 2.03pm
Difficult!
Yup, same font and weight, André.
25.Apr.2006 6.29pm
Probably a caps G.
26.Apr.2006 2.30am
Vero.
26.Apr.2006 6.04am
It seems to be a typeface with two kind of serif. A mix of sans and serif.
26.Apr.2006 6.27am
For some reason, that top serif on the G looks familiar... (small caps G, right?)
Is this something by Robert Slimbach? ITC Giovanni maybe?
26.Apr.2006 6.31am
The Aesc from ITC Giovanni Black seems pretty close:
http://www.myfonts.com/fonts/linotype/itc-giovanni/black/mac-t1/167978/c...
26.Apr.2006 7.11am
Bingo! Well done.
It’s only fair that you got it Miguel, after I stole the last one from you.
Either it was too easy, or you’re too good! It was a cap G BTW.
Over to you.
Nick Cooke
26.Apr.2006 7.25am
Hey, you’re on a roll Miguel, I’ve just read about your new position at Adobe.
Congratulations again, and I hope you still have a bit of time to look in here occasionally.

26.Apr.2006 8.55am
Unfair advantage!! ;^)
29.Apr.2006 12.00am
Thanks!
> It’s only fair that you got it Miguel, after I stole the last one from you.
No, you earned it.
> Either it was too easy, or you’re too good!
I’ve always been a big fan of Robert’s work, so I’d say it was free pizza for me ;^)
> and I hope you still have a bit of time to look in here occasionally.
I’ll do my best. Thomas always finds time to drop by, so I think it won’t be too difficult for me to do the same.
BTW, may the quiz continue...
29.Apr.2006 3.07am
Er… Don’t know what’s going on, but I can’t see the sample here. How frustrating.
Oh, by the way, Miguel : I had lunch yesterday with Malou Verlomme, and he said to say hello.
29.Apr.2006 9.56am
Dunno what’s going on. According to Thierry there’s seems to be a problem.
Thanks Stéphane, it’s nice to hear about Malou.
29.Apr.2006 10.34am
Ok, it’s an ampersand, obviously. Maybe an Alternate one.
I don’t know why, but it looks somewhat Dutch to me.
29.Apr.2006 10.48am
Ampersand: no
Alternate: yes
Dutch: no
29.Apr.2006 11.10am
Not an ampersand ? My God, what kind of glyph is this ?
29.Apr.2006 9.37pm
> My God, what kind of glyph is this ?
A nice one :^D just like the rest of the glyphs in this font ;^)
BTW, it’s from a compatriot of yours...
29.Apr.2006 9.57pm
So it is designed by a Frenchman. Hmm.
1.May.2006 2.20pm
Thierry Puyfoulhoux ?
1.May.2006 2.26pm
Yes ! Thierry Puyfoulhoux’s Classica Prestige — and it is an ampersand, by the way.
1.May.2006 3.02pm
Link?
1.May.2006 3.42pm
The designer’s website : www.presencetypo.com
See also www.myfonts.com/fonts/presencetypo/classica/prestigenormala-18204/charma...
1.May.2006 3.44pm
Nice!
1.May.2006 3.56pm
How many ampersands does one font need?
- Lex
1.May.2006 8.35pm
You got it, congratulations!
As for the glyph, perhaps we could call it an hybrid between an ampersand and an alternate ’e’. Place your bets: http://www.myfonts.com/fonts/presencetypo/classica/prestigenormala-18204...
BTW, the PDF on his website (which for some reason is linked to webarchive) is really nice: http://www.presencetypo.net/pdf/Prestige.pdf
Speaking of ligatures and alternates...
8.May.2006 9.17am
OK, everyone — sorry for keeping you waiting. Here’s the new one.
9.May.2006 6.23am
Designed in the last 5 years?
9.May.2006 1.46pm
Nope — much older.
9.May.2006 2.05pm
It reminded me of Goudy No.30, but it isn’t. Is that a cap R?
9.May.2006 3.13pm
It’s definitely a cap R. But it’s not by Goudy.
9.May.2006 5.07pm
It this an alternate in the font?
10.May.2006 12.42am
Sorry Mike it’s the normal form — there is only one font in this typeface, anyway.
10.May.2006 1.08am
Yikes!!!
10.May.2006 1.11am
hmmm... that must mean its all capitals right?
10.May.2006 1.13am
Only Caps and SmallCaps, yes.
10.May.2006 1.16am
Okay its 1:14am here in the USA and you know what?.... I’m gonna stay up until I can put a list together. ahaahaha.
Watch me not get it
Mikey
10.May.2006 1.25am
okay- big foundry or small guy?
10.May.2006 1.36am
Its not Adobe!
10.May.2006 1.53am
No, it’s not Adobe. But I can’t tell you where my version comes from, though (and the small caps are very badly designed, by the way).
10.May.2006 5.46pm
Celeste I hope I’m right!
Carolus Roman?
It might be under the name Carleton too.
I found it at dafont.com
http://www.dafont.com/font.php?file=carolus_roman
10.May.2006 6.05pm
Opps... my bad! It has to be Carleton because you said this font had only one style... so Carleton!!!
Mikey
10.May.2006 11.43pm
Congratulations, Mike — it’s definitely Karl Erik Forsberg’s Carolus.
The “italic” showed at dafont.com looks like a very bad “slanted” (really, it’s even worse than my fake small caps) which was not, to my knowledge, part of the original (1954) design.
Your turn.
11.May.2006 1.23am
Okay I’m being bold here. I’m putting the whole glyph up for analysis. The reason why? There has NOT been one single discussion of this wonderful font on Typophile and very little about its designer. For shame!
Let see if you get it.
;-P
Mikey
PS... This font proves two people looking at the same thing will always have a different result.
11.May.2006 1.42am
Janson Text?
11.May.2006 4.21am
Oh wait, is it Tyrnavia by Gabór Kóthay for T.26?
11.May.2006 3.19pm
Sorry Geoff... No to both...
Whereas Janson Text is for strictly serious text work and Tyrnavia is a little more stylish, this font’s sole function is display.
PS... Funny you mention Janson. He seems to get all the credit.
11.May.2006 3.58pm
Is this a _2_ of a display script?
11.May.2006 4.47pm
No sorry, its not the number 2...
Sorry for not clarifying... the glyph above is another style in this excellent display family. I have shown two styles here but there are a dozen.
You might find a mildly similar font if you go through your computer’s repertoire of text fonts. The font you’ll find in your computer, all though not the same, has a few similar styles and in some cases you’ll do a double take. Perhaps this may jar your memory.
Mikey
12.May.2006 4.42am
Would it have anything to do with Nicholas (or Miklós) Kis… who originally cut the so-called “Janson”?
“You might find a mildly similar font if you go through your computer’s repertoire of text fonts.” — If you’re fortunate enough to own more than a few fonts. Maybe some day! Can’t wait.
12.May.2006 5.11am
URW Janson by Mr. Kis
Maybe, not too sure.
12.May.2006 5.18am
I don’t think it is… but is the second glyph a British pound sign?
12.May.2006 5.30am
Conor> Yes you are spot on!!!
Miklós Kis types are the basis for this font. The designer developed a text face based on Kis’s types (it got used in an entire edition of a font catalog), then he made this face (took over 2 years). He also designed other faces that seem inspired by his initial work.
Just recently this designers work is getting a lot attention (except for this font). At least one of this designers fonts have been honored with a prestigious award.
Mikey
12.May.2006 6.05am
Kis BT?
//
No… I guess not. It’s not Ehrhardt (Linotype), Ehrhardt Std (Veer) or Nikis either.

Could it be this?
13.May.2006 1.31pm
The most recent glyph is a Q caps.
13.May.2006 4.02pm
Conor> Sorry, no to all your guesses. And its not a british pound sign.
Sim> No, its not a Q either.
This gem of a font, while based on Kis’s work, is playful- like a dip in the ocean. Speaking of which, you might then appreciate this ornamental style pictured here....
;-)
Mikey
PS... This designer has released another full-featured collection, that to my knowledge, is the only font that the small cap “I” dotted on top... very unusual. The collection I’m using for this game though, has 12 STYLES of typographic goodness.

Aquamarine Titling by Gábor Kóthay & RXC
You’re a crafty fellow.
So… I think:
1st glyph is “a” from Aquamarine Basics Titling Roman
2nd glyph is “L” from Aquamarine Basics Swash Italic
3rd glyph is “E” from Aquamarine FancyCaps FloralCaps One
16.May.2006 7.04am
Well done Conor, that’s definitely it.
> You’re a crafty fellow.
Crafty indeed, I got close with the name of the designer, Gabór Kóthay. You could have let us in on that hint or would that have been too easy? ;^)
16.May.2006 2.10pm
Conor> You ROCK!!! You got it.
Gabór Kóthay is the most important and talented designer in Hungary right now. His Tyrnavia is beautiful and was used in a T-26 Catalog. The lowercase a, can be found in both Tyrnavia and Aquamarine and nowhere else. Aquamarine (I would say) is Tyrnavia’s display complement. Speaking of which Hoefler Text has some similar features to Aquamarine and it also has display counterpart... it comes standard with macs. They probably looked at a similar manuscript but the results are very different.
Incognito is the family I was referring to that had the only small caps I to be dotted and it was for that family that he received a TDC award. Zanzibar is another wonderful font of his... which happens to be a thousand times better than Emigre’s Not Calson. His collections are beautiful and well priced. You get a lot for the money- something particularly important to me.
Geoff> Giving away the designers name would have been very ’uncrafty’.
Conor it is your turn to impress with the craftyness.
;-)
Mikey
PS... Did you get my corny pun about the font being a gem?
16.May.2006 3.18pm
Ta.
Had a gander at Hoefler Text & Titling all right… one of the first I’d ruled out. I’m a big fan of the H&F-J team’s work.
May take me a day or so to come up with a good detail of a challenging font as I don’t have too many at my disposal.
Did you get my corny pun about the font being a gem? — I did
Cheers.

I’m afraid you’ll have to search further afield for this one.

Hope none of you thought the “Good Luck” gesture in Irish was some sort of cryptic hint.
Do folks want a few hints on this one?
22.May.2006 9.42am
A hint wouldn’t hurt. :^P

The shapes make it feel like Matthew Carter’s Mantinia to me, but I’m quite sure it isn’t that. Is it close in any way, though ?
22.May.2006 3.09pm
Bien joué! Mais… c’est son père tout craché! You’re veering in the right direction.
22.May.2006 3.15pm
Was this designed in the last 5 years?

Touché… ;^) …no.

No guesses on what the glyph is?
Thought the good folk of Typophile would have cracked it in an instant.
25.May.2006 2.30am
Jeremy Tankard’s Alchemy perhaps ? But I can’t find the darn glyph anywhere…
25.May.2006 3.13am
No sorry…
…the type family (which is quite prolific) in question is far less bizarre and far more practical.
I’m mildly surprised Geoff hasn’t got this… more surprised you haven’t got it Stéphane.
25.May.2006 9.12am
Hey! Give me a break, I’ve been busy. ;^)
But I’m pretty certain it’s Porchez’s Le Monde Livre Classic, ER ligature.
25.May.2006 9.24am
!!Congratulations!!
Le Monde Livre Classic — Jean Francois Porchez (1999)
You are as the French man would say himself a legende
26.May.2006 8.15am
Thanks Conor!
I’ve been a little busy, I’ll try and find something challenging for you and everybody else. ;^)
I should be able to post the glyph crop somtime tomorrow if you’re all patient.

Ligature «st»
28.May.2006 7.06pm
Not quite, but the first letter of the ligature is correct. Sorry I’m such a liga-nerd. :^)

_sp_ lig?
28.May.2006 7.17pm
Yes! A _sp_ ligature with bit of a baroque favour. ;^)
29.May.2006 8.45pm
This looks nice. Like a musical symbol or something. I can’t wait to find out what face this is.

No, the only thing they have in common is that the originals were designed in the same century... ;^)
31.May.2006 2.16pm
It’s DTL Fleishmann Italic Alternate. Right ?
31.May.2006 3.08pm
I agree on the DTL Fleischmann Italic but I’d guess on italic display regular instead of italic alternate. (the “swoosh” of the p ends a bit different)
31.May.2006 5.05pm
Well done Stéphane! It is indeed DTL Fleischmann Alternate Italic (Medium), the gorgeous _sp_ ligature. This is a fairly faithful revival by Erhard Kaiser of the 1739 Fleischmann Roman, it’s such a shame it’s so over priced, I want it for that ligature alone. :^D

Here’s the new one.

Tyfa Text, lowercase f
1.Jun.2006 1.58pm
No really, Miss Tiffany, you’re impossible ! I thought this one could last at least a couple of days ! Sigh…
It’s definitely Frantisek Storm’s Tyfa, based on celebrated Czech type designer Josef Tyfa’s eponymous typeface.
Your turn.
1.Jun.2006 2.09pm
Stéphane this happens to be one of my favorite typefaces. Don’t feel bad. :^D
I’ll post a new round shortly.
