Type ID Board: How to post a sample or image

Bald Condensed's picture

If your sample is available online, you can link to it via a hyperlink, though we prefer you upload an attachment in the thread itself. There are two options:

To attach an image in your original post.

  1. Click edit in the black bar at the top (right under the thread title) if you're adding an image to a pre-existing thread.
  2. At the bottom of the page you'll see Attachments in red.
  3. Click Browse and select the image on your hard drive.
  4. Click Submit.

To use the inline image upload feature you will need a current version of the Flash Player. Once you have it installed you will see an “Insert image” link on the post form. After clicking that link, browse your hard drive and select the desired image.

Make sure your sample image is compatible with this board:

  • RGB only, no CMYK
  • GIF, PNG or JPEG only, no TIFF or BMAP
  • although PDFs are supported, we really don't like them (unless it's a vector file)

If you do not comply to these specifications, there's a high probability your sample won't show up in certain browser versions.

Mind the size – don't post unnecessary big images and do not exceed 590 pixels in width.

No pdf files please!

But Yveeeeeeeeeeeees... How are people supposed to get a feeling for the font in a global context if the background of the posted image isn't the size of the entire planet? Scale is reeeeeeeally important in type IDing.

Yves, just a thought I've had recently. I pretty much keep myself up to date on Typophile via the Tracker: http://www.typophile.com/tracker and what I thought would be nice is if all Type-IDs had an 'ID:' before them. ie. 'ID: Something similar to House Gothic' This would help myself and others who use the Tracker to understand which threads are IDs and which pertain to the forums. I understand this might end up being too much work for you and Stephen because not everyone would adhere to this policy. Just and idea really...to make some of our lives easier and some of our lives harder :-P

Okay, trying this for the first time... can't find "Click edit in the black bar at the top."

Just "edit".

Strange -
today, i'm having a problem to post a picture – i'm getting an error during the upload procedure.

image is rgb, 8-bit, jpg, png, width less than 600px.
Firefox 2.0.0.2 (WIN) and flashplayer 9 installed.

What am i doing wrong? I'm the only one?

It should be mentioned here, that the image name shouldn’t contain a space, because if so one gets an error message when trying to upload.

WRONG: sample image.jpg

RIGHT: sample_image.jpg

Just to be safe, get in the habit of no caps in the file name. They seem to be a problem for some servers.

having touble uploading photos.... i don't see edit.. am i supposed to be on the submit forum topic???

Bald Condensed's picture

Yeah, I know, but some valuable additions were made in the beginning, so I'll only remove it when the new one is ready.

I tried uploading a picture, following your recipe. I did not work. I shut down safari, reset safari and login again, did not work.
The image is a 590 wide by 300 and something pixels. The name of the file in the other hand starts with CMYK. I guess your smart (Esmarte) system reads the title and reject the image, as I get the usual

"Could not copy image. Error"

I suppose I will have to reinstall my system to get this to work.

Hi André,
just another quick check:

  • the file name does not contain spaces (or any other ø∂∂ ¢håræct€rs)
  • you have the right Flash plugin installed with your browser

Whether the image is in RGB mode or CMYK actually doesn’t affect the upload: It’s just that CMYK images don’t show up in a number of browers, and therefore are of little use.

reinstall my system
Don’t. That’d be a time misspent.

Hi Florian,

"Reinstall my system" is a joke. I am not going to do that :). Listen, I have got the right image format. I said that the name of the file has "cmyk" on it and that doesn't change a thing. Even if the file was/is a four channels of color, or a single index color channel, that wouldn't make any difference.

I don't remember when I did install the new Flash but it wasn't long long ago, maybe a month ago or so. Just to satisfy your curiosity: I have uploaded a bunch of images and it is just click and insert the image, even Simone, my kitty, could do that.

In the other hand it is interesting that sometimes I am able to upload without problems and, sometimes I don't. When I have the error message, sometimes by simple restarting safari it let me do it ...

The naming: Remember when files couldn't have a file name bigger then 8 characters, and the habitual "don't use ! " # $ % & / ( ) = strange characters, specially asterisk"?

I guess you are right: It is Flash doing it. I can't tell because when I hear Flash, the first thing that comes to my mind is, Gordon.

It is not a big deal. I am just saying: Sometimes it does not, work.

I get hiccups from time to time too. Usually what keeps me from uploading properly is a space somewhere in the name.

Is it more polite to attach or to use an inline image?
prgr

Miss Tiffany's picture

Jan, inline is always the quickest, but I don't think either are impolite.
