Hello,
Newbie here...How do you guys design your fonts? Pertaining more to the previous TypeBattles were you are designing whole sets/alphabets...
Do you draw them out and scan them in?
Do you use font designing software? If so, what is the standard or preferred application?
You guys do some great work and i am just curious how you guys do it.
-thanks for any feedback

Ha! I was trying to remember what the 'pointing hand dingbat' was called. I should have looked at the wiki.
30 May 2006 — 4:32pm
just added it, christian. oh, and i have a terrible idea for this one... to be continued...
31 May 2006 — 12:48am
They are not new, I drew them for my Capone typefamily.
31 May 2006 — 8:58am
Not exactly what I wanted it to look like, but it is what it is.

The two hands are really nice Pieter! They also have the nice necessary 20's charm. But if I shoot with my fingers I always keep up the thumb.

Somebody make a fist out of letters (you know, like Bembo's Zoo).

I love the shading on Pieter's, and Issac I tried something like that too, and believe me yours is a lot better. I thought it would be funny to do a blackletter dingbat, but funny turned difficult rather quickly, and I had to give up, because, like Sebastian in Type Battle 12 WW3, my girlfriend awaits. The top one is based on Wilhelm Klingspor Gotisch (I know I know the contrast is all wrong), and the second one is more of a glyphic thing, based on
protest t-shirt and posters and what not.
Hopefully I can sneak away and work on some more later.

Christian,
I was hoping the next battle would be:
Design caps and numbers for the lc you did last week.
Followed by: design diacritics, design an alternate weight etc.
This would be a public service!
Randy
PS. Thanks all for your kind comments last week.

This was my hope too. Would help me to get "Typebattle 12 – WW3" on a certain level in short time, while battling.
So now TP12-WW3 has a pointless pointer, that does not yet fit it really. I'll first have to draw this with a real pen, there will be an update...

here's my Saul Bass-inspired pointer hand.. couldn't decide which of these two i liked best, so i'm posting both! (plus the third one i made just for fun.)
1 Jun 2006 — 4:50pm
claes, your third one somehow reminds me of this:
1 Jun 2006 — 5:00pm
haha! that's too funny.
it should remind you of this though:

Well this one seemed easy enough for me... so here's my (first simple, then just lazy, then somewhat concentrated and committed) twenty minutes:
I think that last one could be interesting with some tweaking...

Seemed difficult for me 'cause I'm useless at drawing (hands). So the first of these at least is a blatant bit of a plagiaris- er, homage to Bob McKimson, for which I apologise...

dtw,
your first one looks to me like an evil villain's "Arrest Them!" pointy hand. (;

LOL! (It's Bugs Bunny, of course)

Look! Over There!
This one can easily be converted into other symbols/meanings just by making certain fingers longer or shorter.
...but I won't go there. :-P

This is appropriate for new editions of Dickens.....
3 Jun 2006 — 5:13am
I love it, that thing looks so beautiful scary!

Since they've all looked kinda masculine so far:

Interesting idea, dtw.
By the way: How do the pointers in Mrs. Eaves look like? I don't have the font and can't look at them...
They should be female.
10 Jun 2006 — 3:52pm
From what I recall Mrs. Eaves doesn't contain pointers.
