GARAGEFONTS' FIRST RELEASE FOR 2004 is Metroflex by designer Thomas Mettendorf of Karlsruhe, Germany. Metroflex is a multi-purpose type system, based on geometric principles and conceived as an "experimental vision!" for Fritz Lang's classic film, Metropolis.
From the designer Mettendorf:
"In the summer of 2000, Ralph Smith asked me if I would like to start my next font project with the following motive: Design a standard type system that fits into the world of Fritz Lang's Metropolis, a silent film created in 1926. The film is famous for its portrayal of Fritz Lang's visionary Metropolis, an ominous premonition of our future: over-bearing and industrial city life. Well, I found this quite imaginative, and I decided to take the challenge!"
Metroflex has a "Narrow" space saving width, a standard "Uni" width, and a comfortable "Wide" width. The narrow and wide fonts are distinct enough to be combined in a body of text, while the Uni weights refer to an economical width many contemporary sans serif text faces use. Within each width, 5 weights and 4 styles are available.
Metroflex is engineered like a machine, urban and precise. An experiment, created within the vision of Metropolis and simultaneously, a usable communication tool for contemporary design.
