This is how it works:

  • A complete glyph is published in the Type ID Pop Quiz.
  • Try to identify the typeface. To win, you need to name both the typeface and the weight.
  • Show off your knowledge by casually mentioning additional trivia, like who designed it, when and by whom was it (first) published, and other cool stuff to impress your fellow Typophiles with.
  • The winner produces a new challenge -- a complete glyph, black on white background, presented in a 288 x 288 pixel square, including a R204G000B00 1 pixel border.
  • The person who posts a challenge can't win the next game.

In case of any disputes, I will act as judge, jury and avenging angel of wrath.

If you think this is a little too difficult, maybe try the Entry Level Type ID Pop Quiz first. Too easy? Go to the Expert Level Type ID Pop Quiz.

Good luck everyone, and have fun. ;^)

With respectful thanks to the originator of this utterly useless but highly entertaining waste of time, the often imitated but never duplicated Cheshire Dave.

All rights guys'n'gals, because you asked for it. ;^)

i know, i know! but i'll leave it for someone else to guess this dwiggins-inspired face.

Upright Italic _s_ of Odile by Sibylle Hagmann, 2006. I loved her presentation at this year's Typecon. What a beautiful typeface!

Here's the next test:

Good heavens, Mr. Peters, you granted my wish!

We aim to please, Bram, we aim to please. ;^)

I hope this one is to you liking, yaknow, not too easy and not too hard -- just difficult enough. :^P

Is this a small cap g?

Is this a small cap g?
No, sir it is not.

Capital G of Lido STF Regular by Frantisek Storm. Based on Times and available for free download!

Here's another:

Is it Garamond Bold Italic ? (lowercase p :) )

Okay, Garamond maybe it is. But which Garamond :) ?

You guys are close, but I can't help since I posted the last challenge.

Is it Sabon Italic?

Classical Garamond Bold Italic maybe?

Yep, it's Sabon Italic by Jan Tschichold (lowercase p of course).

Classical Garamond is Bitstreams copy of Sabon (and the weight is regular, not bold).

So I guess seventy7 is the winner here. :)

ok, ts back to the beginners enclosure for me so for a little while longer so!

Freight ... nope.

Not Freight. Shall i give a tiny hint?

Hint: In 2004 it won a national design prize in its country of origin.

Yes! Good job, Tim. Yves says that to win you must also name the weight. If you got this far, the weight will be easy!

Kontrapukt Light, I would say. Btw, I think this is one of the best free fonts you can get.

I agree. Looking forward to seeing your type challenge...

This one should not be too difficult.
Easy typeface but quite a small portion.

Which is the name under which this font was first published?

Complete glyph for Intermediate Level, please.

Oops, sorry. Did not read that properly. Will post a new one in a minute...

Ooh, another classic. Aldus Roman?

Hey, that was quick! Aldus Roman it is.

One of my favourite text fonts :)

Now a sans serif for a change.

Costa Ptf, of course!

I think you're close in flavor, but not quite there. Costa has that swooshy terminal thing on the leg if its _R_

R glyph in Costa has a stroke-like terminal on the tail.

Not Costa, not Legacy. My challenge is a little more chauvinistic :)

Hmm, it's not Lisboa either, is it?

No, not Lisboa, it's not named after a Portuguese city...

DTL Haarlemmer Sans Regular.

Yes! Well done, that's it, named after the Dutch city of Haarlem.

No guesses? It's a quirky text face from Poland. The tapering stem is a characteristic design feature.

Hmm... Vik Burian's Maiola is the first face that came to my mind when I see that, but her taper is much more subtler.

Besides, Maiola is Czech inspired :)

The first metal version dates back to 1960. A recent digitization is freely available.

OK - I think I've cracked it. Is it:

Typeface: Antykwa Toruńska (Medium)
Designer: Zygfryd Gardzielewski (1914–2001)

Yes, that's the one. Well done!

Hope that wasn't too tricky, I was somewhat curious whether people would know it at all...

Whoa, impressive find, Frank! =^O I for one didn't know that one at all.

OK, Frank e-mailed me if I could fill in for him, so here's the new challenge -- a well-hung capital Q. Not too difficult this time. ;^)

Relato regular by Eduardo Manso?
