In the history of pictograms...what is the one thing that stands out in everyones minds? Is it connected to isotype, transport, olympics...

You'd think they'd be vitally important for signage in countries where multiple languages are spoken, but despite existing ISO standards, they really aren't.

Well, of course if you write TAXI is better. What is "similar" ("iconic") should be used as such and actualised, for example I like the work of Jonathan Corum :

I see your point, but can you really imagine an airport or olympic games without them?

Hayley, no —— but be more clear, I am sure other people might contribute nicely to this thread if you focus your question even on an hypothetical apparatus/purpose.

Erik Spiekrmann wrote an article in 2003, but it is only in German and I can just grasp a few words, he also quoted McLuhan's "The Medium Is The Message".
