Whoops! I’d be remiss not to mention the essential FontBook, which, while not as lifestyle-oriented as the goodies above, can double as (1) scanner lid weight, (2) stepstool to reach that cookie jar, (3) self defense tool, or (4) booster seat.

We were at World Market the other day in the wine section. I, of course, being a designer with no real skillset in terms of wine always pick my wine based on the label. I walked past a stack of bottles that had this wood type label. I thought ’hey, that looks like something from Hatch’.

I picked it up and, sure enough, it was...Hatch Show print wine!

Alas, we didn’t grab that bottle, and I haven’t been able to find it online anywhere.

If a wine bottle or a bottle of booze doesn’t bother to have a nice, classy design... Forget it.

I think a Handfont would be cool. We were talking about that in another thread.

>What to get the beloved Typophile in your life?

I’d like to see a list of gifts that would help bring a ’potential’ typophile over to the darkside. Ie someone with an interest in broadening their understanding and appreciation of all things type.

On the other hand, there is the problem of the fanatically devoted typophile who already has everything type that is not priced astronomically.

For my favorite typophile I’m thinking about “this unique gift item” for Christmas. I’m not sure if he’d like it, but I’m pretty confident he doesn’t have it already :)

Forgive my ignorance, but why would one need that William?

Sorry, I guess that was a little too esoteric. Orthodox Jews interpret the Biblical prohibition on starting fire on the Sabbath as forbidding switching on or off electric lights, as that might involve a spark. However it is permitted to leave an electric light on.

Hence one night a week you have the problem of reading in bed before sleeping. If you leave a light on, then you can’t turn it off. But this moveable shade hides the visible light without switching the lamp off, and without covering it so it might overheat and catch fire.

Not being Orthodox, I find it kind of hilarious and sweet at the same time. Love that animated gif also. Definitely a ’unique gift item’!

“What’s wrong with pointing out a non-typographic, counter-Christian gift for
Christmas? YOU’RE TRYING TO MINIMIZE THE HOLOCAUST, AREN’T YOU?!”

(Not that it’s not a nice lamp and all.)

I have to imagine even an Orthodox Jew would have to find it a bit hilarious.

More than hilarious, it’s pretty clever. Find a work-around for the pork
thing too, and make that a gift to the world of Islam - just not on Christmas.

I’ve heard that in some Muslim countries they hunt and eat wild boar and claim it’s not a pig. The way that the prohibition is stated in Jewish law you couldn’t make that fly, so to speak. I don’t know anything about sharia, though, so I don’t know if it’s just another amusing piece of wishful thinking, which is what I’m assuming...

Interesting, my wife often recounts details of a wild boar hunt she attended in south western Turkey a few years back, but only as a fable in support of sensible footwear.

In Israel I hear they raise levitated hogs. (here, para 5)

>Give them a copy of VOLT ;-)

That would turn them off type for ever ;-) And as it’s free it’s not much of a gift. So think of it as our gift to you ;-)

Ohmmmmm ... Ohmmmmm ... Oinkmmmmm ...

BTW, are pigs inherently “dirty”, or is it because of the way they generally live (not that mud is so bad)? Because in Spain the Pata Negra pigs of the region of Serra live better than most humans. And they’re fed only one thing ever: acorns. Interesting sidebar: in Armenian acorn is “khoz-gaghin” which means pig-nut.

Fabulous. I didn’t know that. I do know they call the result on the table ’white steak’, so they don’t mention where it came from :)

>Alas, we didn’t grab that bottle, and I haven’t been able to find it online anywhere.

I know someone, who knows someone, who told me all about the The Show brand...

It comes out of the < a href=”http://tfexnet.tfewines.com/web/do/public/start>Trinchero Family Estates which seems to be a very groovy winery. Their website has oodles of downloadable graphics including a coolio “The Show” poster. (scroll down to #9876)

And if you’re interested in the The Show Cabernet Sauvignon 2005, 3 Bottle, fact sheet it gives a complete overview of the brand and a upc code. (scroll midway down the page)
And there are The Show label shots and a hi res The Show 2005 Cabernet Sauvignon group bottle shot also.

Nothing quite like finding another great cabernet, except finding more and more great cabs, especially those that have well designed graphic labels!

Thanks for that.

btw the Old English for acorn – ’picbred’ translates as pig bread and possibly gave us the word pig.

For anyone who considers them a serious bibliophile and typophile I’d gift them with Leaves from the Pie Tree recently completed by fellow Typophile Jim Rimmer. Here I quote from P22:

Jim Rimmer has completed: “Leaves from the Pie Tree”. This magnum opus is an autobiographical account of his life with type and the book arts along with “how-to” knowledge of the craft that a rare few possess. This extremely limited edition of 50 copies will include a co-edition of 10 copies made for P22 and offered at a discount to the first 6 purchasers of the full Rimmer Type Foundry Collection. The size of the book is approx. 10-1/2” x 14-3/4”. Printed in the monotype cast Quill type on 120 GSM Arches Cream text paper on a Colts Armory press. The book will be hand bound with a leather and linen quarter binding with linocut illustrations, tipped in images and even a hand cut letter pattern used in the creation process of his metal type. The book retails for $700(CND) and can be ordered directly from Jim Rimmer at the Pie Tree Press ( rimmertype {at} shaw {dot} ca ). The p22 co-edition will be available for $400 with the purchase of the RTF collection at $999.95. Only a few copies of the P22 co-edition can be accommodated.

$1399.95 with full Rimmer type collection or $650 (US)

There are sample images if you follow the link above. It looks to be a tactile and educational experience. Long live the printed word!
