Anyway why they call a font: police in French?

Not sure on that one JFP.
But... the Caledonia ID in Jon's post is pure genious!

Heh--that sounds like a set up for a joke. I wish I could think of a good punchline. :-)

My French-English dictionary isn't much help:

That's pretty funny stuff.

> Anyway why they call a font: police in French?

Not sure. Are there too many policemen in France?

hhp

With apologies to JFP:

Q: Why do they call a font police in French?

A: Because the gendarme will hang up if you don't.

Hilarious. We get irrelevant and stupid exactly as Coltz parodies us. But we've also got the guts to make mistakes in public, and to learn from each other, which I find kind of endearing.

The warm sting of well-aimed parody. Definitely a good laugh.

> Anyway why they call a font: police in French?

(this question is just to illustrate how something some questions in some forums are like Daidala describe)

The answer is not very interesting, but to don't died without to know...

Well, I still don't know for sure: "Font" came from French "Fonte" who describe same thing from old hot metal days. Police, is more the list, the content of what you get from a font (how many a, how many e, etc.)

But one day in early days of computers, a stupid translator guy decided to use that Polices in menus rather that simply Fontes.

Now, we stick to this horrible double meanning word.

That Daidala post is pretty funny. Reminds me of some of the some of the more wacky directions that threads here take.
