Best (and worst) of Typophile 2006
Just a bit of fun really.
What were the best (or worst) threads/comments/wiki articles/battles/&c. in 2006?
Was there a thread that you found particularly insightful? Was there one that began interestingly, but you just simply ignored after it descended into flames? Was there one thread that made you split your seams with laughter at each succeeding comment? Was there a bit of information that somehow saved your hide? Was there one that was just simply too silly to spend time commenting on?
Let’s hear your thoughts!

Oh it’s all good. I always learn something. I particularly loved when someone from China posted a photo of their cat looking at a photo of my cat on screen. That has nothing to do with type but some of my favorite threads are the ones that get hijacked into silliness.
It’s the end of the year and I’m not gonna say anything nasty.

The critique forums are absolutely fabulous. I learn so much by seeing others’ work as it develops, and reading the comments that everyone here has about how to improve the typeface.
Best wishes for 2007!

I’ll think of some others later that helped me personally, but the thread of the year has to be the ’Froggy’ critique thread—and those that followed it.
Seeing Chris Lozos come into his own as a type designer has been really exciting, and his beautiful spirit has been a blessing to us all on Typophile.
Matthew Carter liked ’Now Sans’ better at TypeCon 2006, I think, but I’ll always have an affection for the Frog :)

I like it when people get hard core into the history of type, such as the Steile Futura debate.

2nd worst moment - was when I buggered up the Typophile RSS news aggregator page by mistyping the date of an article I posted on my blog.
Worst moment - the second time I did it - today! :-( Sorry! Jared and Joe please fix it.
Cheers, Si

Not sure if it’s the best of the year, but my favorite quote of the day:
It seems that printers, with their commitment to using PostScript Level 1 until their output devices literally rot away, are the true barriers to OpenType universality.

Paul, are you looking for troubles? Leave it, ok? ; )
I spend most of the time at typophile going through old threads and trying to follow the debates especially those related to the history of type or technical issues. Sometimes I just give up, it’s simply too much (read difficult) for me but most of the time there’s something useful and interesting or just plain funny.
On a personal level I’ve learned a lot about myself. It’s a wonderful learning environment and an amazing experience so Papazian if you are reading this: I don’t hate you anymore, I think you’re super cool.

Well. I’m not sure whether this is quite on-topic or not, but. There was this thread a year ago: Trends for 2006.
Despite my hopes and silent encouragement, Hrant didn’t release his elegant Baskerville, neither did Raph release his revolutionary tools. Can’t say I did much myself but, at least it was something I got right.
Happy new year, people.

As a guy who thought he knew a lot about type, the primary lesson for me was that I have a lot to learn. I am grateful for the education I am receiving and for the professional, patient way in which you, my professors, deal with me and others. I have seen many wonderful new (and new to me) typefaces. I have to agree with those who have stated that seeing typefaces submitted for critique, the comments made about them, and the development of the faces is an amazing education. Thanks, everybody.

Eric: was Che the best or worst of 2006? :)

Best part was reading through the Rolling Stoned logo thread, and having the guy who actually did it waltz in and start explaining things. Live, candid history.

“Eric: was Che the best or worst of 2006? :)”
It surely was the longest and most heated :-)

Specifically, Jim Parkinson popped in and gave his scoop of the history. I find it inspiring and just damn cool. The elegance and effectiveness of that masthead, and its cultural influence, are fascinating.

Whoa Rip van Winkle, that Rolling Stone thread was from 2004!

This thread inspired me to improve my handwriting.

Yeah, that was a great thread! I was left shocked and crying for the future of letter writing.

For worst comment, I’d nominate pretty much any post by User 11274.

Eh? Heh. Missed that detail. Well, I guess it was linked in some other thread. Still a great read. I’ll pretend it was live. :)

Well,
Hello everyone! I would have to go with the “Che” thread. To tell the truth, it’s the first time I ever ventured into any online forum, and I’ve been hooked since then. So, thanks to Hrant, LORE, and especially Eric West for giving us the 511 comment thread. If you missed it here it is:

I’m also very proud to have started the “Politics, Typography, and Pets” thread which eventually led to a cat, in NYC, looking at a picture of another cat, somewhere in Asia, Live on Typophile. Heady days, back in June. If you missed it, here it is:

Is there a prize?

I also loved the thread where we posted pix of ourselves but I can’t find it.

I have to say that the Che thread is fascinating. I’m changing my vote. :) It all ran before I was aware of/addicted to this forum, but that didn’t stop me from rooting for the one from the past, either. I wish I’d been catching this one on-the-fly, for I never before thought of Jasper John’s flags as Americana claptrap, or thought anyone else did.
/me goes and makes popcorn and sits down to read more on the debate...

One of my favorite knee-slappers of the year came from that thread by RN Lee:
Rolexes are what hicks buy when they win the Lotto.
I thought that was pretty funny. I also enjoyed this snarkilicious thread.
