Thanks Bart. In ’Dutch Type’ it also says that a digital version of ’New Alphabet’ (in three weights) was released in 1997 by The Foundry. So a more recent digital version could have been possible, but I agree about the numbers. If this was done in the late 80’s it might have been done using film type, and who knows how many Garamonds were in use then, or whether they were ever digitized.
Cool. I actually owned a copy of the original release on vinyl, but I didn’t trust my memory enough to confirm that the techno font in the image was the same as in the original. It seems likely now that it is.

Tricky. It’s a Garamond revival, but I can’t figure out which one. Garamond Classico comes close, as do Sabon and Bembo.

went through couple of garamond variations but could not pinpoint the right one ... and, no, it is not sabon or bembo. but thank you.
i have a feeling this must be some “classic” typeface saville had lying around but i can’t say which one it is.

How about Adobe Garamond Regular Expert?

Based on the ’J’ I think this is the Font Bureau version of Garamond.

FWIW, the original release of Substance (1988) predates the founding of Font Bureau (1989).

Does it seem that the techno font on the picture would have been around in 1988? I am assuming this must be a newer release.

The techno font is New Alphabet, designed by Wim Crouwel in 1967.
Still, Garamond FB looks very close, but the figures don’t match.

Marc C - I think you’re looking for Architype new Alphabet 3 by The Foundry – it’s not very good, as there are a number of illegible characters.
Nice hijack BTW.
