Everyone can claim that ;) – does it mean a soft and curvy (scriptlike) and “simplistic” sans is a better read for small children (which are beginners)? Or is a proofed antiqua like Bembo, the better way to go?
That was my question.
I collected Brooke Bond tea cards when I was a child (although I didn’t drink tea...)
This was 1959, so I was seven. The text type is 7 pt Plantin — the same face now used in Monocle, BTW.

Interesting. A field guide to what? Perhaps Sassoon. Read more about it at Club Type.

@ Stephen
Why do you think Sassoon is “a typeface for children”, and not e.g. Bembo for example?
>6-12
is a very wide range because (this) 6 years show extreme differences in the development of children.

Why do you think Sassoon is “a typeface for children”
Because it “was designed to be used in children’s books. It was designed for Linotype in 1988 by Adrian Williams and calligrapher Rosemary Sassoon.” *

Nice Nick! And there’s also a Schoolbook version of Plantin which Wallpaper used quite affectively a few years ago.

My son is younger, and likes to read.
The books he’s recently borrowed and read by himself have been set in:
Bembo, Garamond (Adobe and Berthold), Weiss, Veljovic, NC Schoolbook, and Palatino. Usually in big sizes.
To be honest, he doesn’t care about the typeface.
