typeface classification
hi,
i’m trying to get a greater understanding of typefaces and their differences. and was wondering if any of you clever people could recommend a book on this subject. something that really goes in depth with the subject and shows/explains all the different typeface classifications etc.
thanks in advance
anders

Two to start with:
Stop Stealing Sheep & find out how type works by Erik Spiekermann & E. M. Ginger
Elements of Typographic Style by Robert Bringhurst

One of the things I consider to be a great help is that font badges poster from Linotype. It used to be free with every order - I got one hanging here, and it gives you a very quick overview how a typeface might be used. Like it very much.
Concerning books, Elements of Typographic Style is a good one, I definitely would agree!! :-)

First of all:
Try to understand DIN 16 518:

Yes, its in german. But very easy to understand ’cause you’ll find enough examples.
Here you can find approx. 300 more examples:

Here is another nice poster:

And if someone tells you this would be old stuff:
How can you understand where you are going to without knowing where you are coming from?
