Font help needed (new serifs)
I haven’t used to many serifs in corporate identity’s lately and am a bit rusty when it comes to the newest faces around. Can anyone help me find a beautiful classic serif preferably a new design with a special take on ancient italian styles (not french didot look = too soft and female). Keywords are classical but modern, solid and professional not quirky and charming. I just need to hear what you think are good serifs then I can look them up to see if I find something interesting then maybe I can provide you all with a more specific topic question:-)

“classical but modern”
That’s mostly an oxymoron, but I’ll see what I can do. All released within the last 5 years:
Nicholas
Freight Text
Relato
FF Maiola
Delicato
Fresco
Arnhem
FF Nexus Serif

Good ones Stephen. You might wan’t to reconsider your strict ’Italian’ criteria Endre. But then, what isn’t Italian?
I can add http://www.myfonts.com/fonts/paratype/swift/
Swift is 80s but still very contemporary with it’s edges and wedge serifs.
and http://www.typofonderie.com/alphabets/view/Apolline if you really wan’t to go full Italiano.

See what you meant about the oxymoron;-) My bad. I’ll try to explain what I meant. I used those words more as an emotional description rather than the typical typographic definition of fonts. Does that make any sense? Thanks for the font names. I’ll check them out straight away.

Trying to learn a bit about definitions here so maybe you could help me Stephen? I checked out the Porchez typefoundry and found some interesting typefaces in the custom fonts section at the bottom of this page http://www.typofonderie.com/alphabets/ . Where would you put these typefaces if you where to put them in a typographic category. See Mackin, Mencken text (Mencken text has many of the characteristics I am looking for in a serif - wide, large x-height, short ascenders and descenders - do you know any typefaces similar to this?), Renault Identité is interesting as a serif but not really?, what kind is Lion and Sitaline

As time passes and typefaces cross genres, the old classifications are less and less relevant. If you’re looking for something in particular, it’s best to use descriptors like the ones you used, and there are many faces like Mencken:
Greta Text
TheAntiqua
Fedra Serif

Endre I remebered on today: http://www.emigre.com/EF.php?fid=130
Here you have the Italian roots AND the modern look.
Classification wise Porches’ Mencken is a Scotch Roman. Of that class Matthew Carter’s Miller is on of the best. Check it out...

Whitman is a good modern serif, but perhaps the descenders are too big for you? What about ScotchFB?

Proforma is also very nice - in fact, there’s a good number of interesting serifs on the Font Bureau site, including Miller, mentioned above.

I’m beyond rusty— but when it comes to a classical Italian serif face - there is only one that ever popus into my mind—and that’s Classic Roman that has a fresh look everytime!
