Hello,

I am looking for a nice, chunky (with bold, black or ultra weights), sans serif typeface designed by a woman. No offense, men.

Thanks.

There doesn’t appear to be very many choices. I remember a thread about the lack of women in type design. Someone mentioned that in his class women outnumber men (an inspiring statistic), so maybe if you wait there will be more options.

  • PTL Skopex Gothic by Andrea Tinnes
(5 weights & italics and small caps each — ‘contemporary, vertical’)
  • FF Karbid by Verena Gerlach
(3 weights & Display cuts, small caps etc. — ‘Berlinesque, readable’)
  • Linotype Authentic Sans by Karin Huschka
    (4 weights & italics each — ‘post-modern’)
  • Ambigue by Carla Schweyer
    (7 weights — ‘low x-height’)
  • Ronnia by Veronika Burian
    (5 weights & italics each — ‘humanist’)

I’ll leave it to you to judge whether they’re chunky or not …

Florian, great recommendations. Thanks! Ronnia looks like a great option.

Jupiterboy, I’m actually looking for a sans companion to Sybille’s Odille, so it’s funny that you brought up cholla.

Perhaps the designer has a beta sans version?

Armin, you’re welcome. It was very informative for me to take a look at foundries’ libraries from that special angle.
I’ve got one more; double female power:

  • Shannon by Janice Prescott Fishman & Kris Holmes
    (4 weights, 1 italic — ‘Irish, legible’)
