Looking for new Mercury
Hi
I’m looking for a display serif, it needs to be strong, sharp and modern (something like Mercury from HFJ). It would be used for headlines in a newspaper. Farnham is also pretty close, but these feel a bit overused around here. I have always liked the fonts of Gerard Unger, but clients don’t seem to understand him around here.
It would need at least Regular and Bold, but a Light would be great.

Have you seen Greta?

I was going to say Greta as well.
But, the Fedra Serif Display cuts, from typotheque as well, are also very nice.

Farnham is overused in Finland? I wish I lived there.
Arnhem
Miller Display
Pradell
Eudald
Haarlemmer
Freight Display
Leitura Display and News
Publico
Other Modern Headline Serifs from Xavier Dupré (maybe too audacious for a newspaper)
Zingha
FF Reminga
FF Absara Headline

I liked Leitura Display as well. I had never heard of it before, but I was pleasantly surprised. (I linked to their blog, because their website is flash which has no direct links).

Farnham Headline is a bit toned down from the original Farnham for newspapers

Stephen already mentioned Arnhem, but Ourtype also released
Arnhem Fine for sizes above 14pts. Thus, basically a more refined display cut.
Oh btw, Stephen, the link in your last post doesn’t work. :)
And I just now see that you also already had Leitura in your list. I give up. ;)

Fixed. That’s what I get for typing too fast while eating donut.

Newzald Display will be ready really soon, maybe a month, if you can wait. It’ll be released with the rest of Newzald & National.

Well, to be more specific, Farnham is overused in the sense that one of the biggest tabloids in Finland uses it (and in this case one of the “bad” tabloids). In Sweden it has also been used for several highly ranked tabloids. In Scandinavia everyone looks at everyone, and it’s always nice to find new type. Mercury is more used in Finland in magazines, in Sweden both newspapers and magazines use it a lot.
Freight Display was on the top of my list. Now I have to check all these options. Greta does look good.
So does Newzald Kris, but for this project it might not cut the deadline.
I’ll go through this as soon as possible. Thanks a lot!
PS. Has anyone used/seen Union from Alias as for headlines/display?

I’m not sure if you necessarily require the Dutch oldstyle qualities of Farnham and Mercury. If not, and you’re open to other contemporary serif styles, then you might consider the Whitman Display family for newspaper headlines. Font Bureau should be announcing the retail release any day now.
Whitman Display is currently used in the Minneapolis Star Tribune, Tacoma News Tribune, Idaho Statesman, and New Brunswick Telegraph-Journal.
There are some publications in Sweden and Norway that have picked up a few styles of the Display also, but I haven’t seen them in use yet — Ulricehamns Tidning in Sweden, and Firda in Norway.
BTW, Whitman is used for serif text in Finland’s Trendi magazine. This would give you some idea how the typeface works in the Finnish language. But they aren’t using any Display.
I posted some pre-release review samples of the expanded family in this thread a while back.
We should have FB’s website, and my own, updated by next week with PDF samples and everything.

H+F-J just released another monster news family. I can’t find it on their website, but ads for it are in Print, etc. It’s a sensible serif with billions of styles in display and text sizes, including condensed and bold. Maybe their website is being updated next week after the US holiday.

Yes, the site was overhauled and will launch very soon I think. Was the advertised typeface Chronicle?

Crossgrove: Would that be Chronicle? That’s a huge family with Text, Display, and so many different widths. We redesign of another finnish newspaper with Chronicle. But that has more of a classic feel to it though.
Kris: Who will be retailing Newzald? Village?
Here are some gems I’ll be sure to look at more. Leitura Display, Whitman Display, Publico and others. Thanks to everyone!

Yes, that’s it: Chronicle. So I exaggerated an eense; there are “only” 106 styles.

Kris: Who will be retailing Newzald? Village?
Of course!
