Kazillion nodes
I thought you guys would find this entertaining, I recently helped out an illustrator friend who drew a typeface for Nike based on an old super distressed gothic face he found on a barn door or something.
Here’s what happened when I pasted the ai drawings into fontlab.

Ouch!

That’s only because FontAudit is activated, although there are a heck of a lot of nodes.

Haha, that’s pretty insane.

hahaha it’s like it’s saying “ooh here.. oooh here’s a problem... oh! here, another one... see I’m pointing at it... oh here and here and here and here.... oop problem problem problem... ahhhhhhhhh!”
Did FontLab meltdown?
sometimes Illustrator’s simplify path is good for removing a lot of redundant points.

I was thinking about this a bit more- simplifying paths can be okay but it tends to look like a simplified path which is to say - not great. On the other hand manually placing 2000 points per glyph could be painful. I wonder how Device does it. Does anybody here ( Veer folks? ) have any insight to offer us?

It looked really bad when I tried to simplify it. It became more pixelated, and less authentic looking.
Fontlab is such a trooper and never gave up, but it took me sometimes up to 30 seconds to just move the letters to other parts of the window.

That sounds pretty painful.
I am still hoping someone shows up to talk about where golden mean between detail & efficiency might be.

The problem is that the more points you have, the longer it will take to print a job using the resulting font. Does FontLab have an equivalent to FOG’s Clean Up Paths feature?
