Book suggestions

Hi all,

I’ve been interested in typography for many years now and wonder if anyone could recommend any texts on the subject for further reading.

I’ve done the obvious (Bringhurst obviously - which is now like gold dust to get hold of and TYPO by Freidl, Ott & Stein) and a few others, but any general historical texts you could recommend would be fantastic.

A nice simple Monday morning (boo!) question...

Cheers,

Simon

It’s a great list, but I’d be interested to see the list narrowed to the top 3 or top 5, by user opinions.

Triumvirate

Those are on type. And if you want to draw type, Briem and Learn FontLab Fast. Using type well would have another list...

I’m going to piggy back on this thread a bit—no offense intended.

Was having a meal with Peter B. Willberg and picking his brain and I asked him for book design book suggestions and he said look for an author—”Tokay”?

I have a hard time with the German accent, so I thought I’d go home and figure it out but I’ve got zip so far. Anyone have any ideas?

Tschichold, perhaps? The Form of the Book has detailed and specific information on a variety of topics. (subtitle: Essays on the Morality of Good Design)

That was my thought, but I’ve heard him pronounce Tschichold and that’s not what he was saying. I may pretend it was though so I can stop fussing with it.

Could it have been Albert Kapr?
Pronounciation-wise this might come near.
