Looking for thrifty (cheap!) source for FontLab
Hi...
I used (a fully paid-for) Fontographer before on 98/2000/2000Pro, but upgraded to XP Pro recently and now that software does not work. I see work-arounds on the web for getting it to work in XP, but maybe it’s time to upgrade.
I don’t have the circa-$1,000 for a new copy, does anyone know where I can get a legal copy at a VERY good price?
TIA

See if TypeTool would suite your needs (it’s like fontlab light) at $99:
http://www.fontlab.com/font-editor/typetool/
Also upgading to FontLab from Fontographer is only $299 with valid serial:
http://www.fontlab.com/font-editor/fontlab-studio/
FontLab Studio 5 for Windows Upgrade from FontLab 4.0, 3.x and Fontographer US $299.00 Please enter your valid FontLab or FOG serial number in the Other Notes field of the order form.
You can try both as a demo. I’m not sure where your $1000 number is coming from, but direct from the company is thriftier by far.

Thanks for the tip.. I just went over there and upgraded to - downloaded - the full version of FontLab Studio 5 using my old Fontog serial. I guess I’ll be spending the next few days hacking around it to see how it works for me!!
Much appreciated... have a great day...

Any idea how to find an old serial number for Fontographer? I think my copy came with Freehand...7? I doubt I even have the box around anymore...
Oh...wait...I bet it’s still installed on my old 7200...I KNEW I kept that around for a reason...

If all else fails (I know we can all figure out how to get an ILLEGAL one) try picking a copy up cheap on eBay and use the serial from that.

Let’s not do illegal, please. FontLab is a small group of guys who deserve to make a living just like the rest of us.

Fontographer Win has a ram issue; http://www.fontlab.com/contact-and-support/faq/faq-fontographer/
If you can not downgrade your system try a virtual machine with vm ware and emulate your old windows.

Each Fontographer serial number is only eligible to one upgrade to FontLab Studio 5, and we keep track of serial numbers (for all our applications) that are being posted in illegal download sources.
I believe that Fontographer 4.1 (the old Macromedia product, which is still the latest version on Windows) actually displays the serial number in the About box, while Fontographer 4.7 (the relase that we prepared for Mac OS X) and our other products diplay the product number there, which is not the serial number. This is because it is in the users’ best interest to keep their serial number private — so that others cannot spot it, write it down and then use it to upgrade or serialize an illegal copy of their own.
