"Expert" is a label used by foundries to denote font variants with small caps, optional figure sets, or extra characters/glyphs such as ligatures, fractions or ornaments. Expert fonts are becoming less common with advent of OpenType which allows for these extras to be included in the same font that contains the default glyphs.
