Logo design?
I’m looking to have a logo designed for my companies. It’s becoming very difficult to find companies that do good work. Does anyone know where I can find a list of good companies or graphic designers that do good work and understand what goes into making a good logo?

I do that. And I’m not bad at it. http://www.mikesamuelgraphics.com/

In the Bay Area, I’d look at these guys:

Of course there are many others elsewhere, and Mike Samuel’s at the top of a lot of peoples lists.

Wow, I know that being a usability & web standards evangelist on a type nerd site won’t win me friends, but.... why can’t these brilliant print designers have usable websites?! vanderbyldesign is the worst - it was painfully slow and buggy, and all the precious whitespace means I’m squinting to try to see his sample work.
Here endeth the off-topic rant.

I’ll be your friend. ;0)
“why can’t these brilliant print designers have usable websites”
I think all designers (including us web folks) tend to assume that ’hey, I can design X so why not Y and Z?’ We have egos that get us into trouble some times. ;0)
That, or, it likely could be a case of the cobbler’s kids’ shoes.

I am SO not one to throw stones at designers who have no website to speak of (um, eeblet.com is humiliating) - it’s more the people who’ve spent a lot of time and/or money on a horribly unusable site.
Yeah, so maybe I should get back to working on my site redesign.....

I find having a halfway decent site an asset. When a client comes to me and is doubtful of my work I send them to the site and that usually ends the discussion.

I am actually angry at them right now because I don’t want to pay for a membership but I’ll recommend them anyway. What about looking at Logo Lounge’s site, logolounge.com? That way you can pick a logo designer that’s compatible with what your looking for by first looking at the designs and not the credentials. If you don’t want to pay for the membership, there’s always their book. But if your looking at books then, I’d say take a peek at Los Logos. It’s one of my favorites.

A visit to the site LogoPond would give you an opportunity to check out the work of a wide variety of designers.
