Hello Georg,

thank you very much, there are some gems among those!

Weiß Kursiv is a beauty, and so is Semper-Antiqua! Is its ‘I’ really that fat?

Skizze: Is the ‘X’ upside-down? Stylistic alternates for ‘d’, ‘F’ and ‘P’ – and ‘I’=‘J’, no?

Carola? That is Cooper Black! Certainly not ‘Erstguß 1896’. But it definitely has a nice pilcrow.

Lucina has a ‘Cº’ and a ‘Cie’ – were they both used for Compagnie?

Cheers,
F

Hello Florian,
Yes, Semper Antiqua is an original print scan.

Skizze: Well, of course a mistake with the upside down X. And.. No, I won’t print it again.
BUT: Starting on 23th of March, 8:30 pm you can buy the original character set on Ebay.
Take a bid and its your chance to turn the X vica-versa. :-)
Ebay name: Bleisetzer
http://search.ebay.de/_W0QQfgtpZ1QQfrppZ200QQsassZbleisetzer

Although around 16 other character sets will be offered there the next two sunday nights, including Semper-Antiqua. Or, Florian, do you realy want to be one of these typographic pro’s not having an original lead letter form? Tsssss... ;-)

And: Yes, Carola is from 1896 - see “Handbuch der Schriften” Seemann. Its true.

Lucina: Co. and Cie. are company remarks like today Ltd. or GmbH.
Some other lead character sets had the same. See Prägefest:

“Concord Kursiv” que belle...

Well, I thought about offering an english version.
Problem: My english is too poor.
And... This are german fonts, german culture. I want it in german. Its something we can be proud on. And all visitors from other countries of course are very welcome. The facts e.g. in the font collection, are more or less international. An american or hungerian typographist understands it as well as a german one.

And... there is always the cance to ask by email. My answers in Pidgeon Engish might be funny.. but I try. Or take a chance to visit Drupa 2008 - the magazine is around 8 km from Drupa and everyone who visits us, gets a marvellous fresh and real coffee from Vienna. (Yes, this was an invitation.)

Thank you for that invitation. If only I believed that one day I will be able to afford (or justify) a jet ride to Europe (ever again).

Sigh. At least I love where I am.

Well, Koppa, so do I.
WI is Wyoming, right?
I do not know anything about it.
Just cliches like Western films, “The Duke” riding into the raysing sun and guys, quiet and hard men.
No, please, do not correct it. I am an old man and want to hold my cliches ;-)

No, no problem; I didn’t intend to nag – it was just a clarification question.

Co. and Cie. are company remarks like today Ltd. or GmbH.

Thanks, I knew about that. I just wondered if they both are abbrevations for the same word. Where’s the difference, just personal preference?

Carola is from 1896 - see “Handbuch der Schriften” Seemann. Its true.

I believe you that there is a Carola from 1896 – but it simply isn’t this one. Have a look: digital versions of Cooper Black by Oswald Bruce Cooper, Barnhart Brothers & Spindler 1922.
Cooper’s former teacher, Frederic W. Goudy, is said to have made a copy-cat version, Goudy Heavyface. If it was true what you’ve wrote, they both would have plagiarized Hermann Hoffmann. Guess it’s just a mistake in names.

Carola:
Yes, you are right. I found a (small) example of Carola from Hermann Hoffmann here:
http://www.klingspor-museum.de/KlingsporKuenstler/Schriftdesigner/Hoffma...

But its not my one...

But it cannot be an english or american font. Its on 23,56 mm height - german height. It was coming from a german typesetting company.

Well, I have to check it again and I’ll stop the entry.
Thank you, very good critic.

Ah, that’s Carola! There’s a digital version, called Karolla:

Designed at ParaType in 1994 by Tatiana Lyskova.
Based on Karola Grotesk of H. Berthold and Bauer type foundries (early 20th century) and Boutique of Haas type foundry

Georg wrote: But it cannot be an english or american font.

The MyFonts site also knows that Cooper Black was acquired in 1924 by the Schriftguß AG in Dresden.

Dear Florian,
yes, you are right - I can confirm your information.
I found an article at Bernhard Schnelle’s website exactly about this font.
And I changed the entry in my font collection. Including our little story about the classification and your name (if you do not want it, please let me know...):

http://www.bleisetzer.de/cms/front_content.php?idcat=57&idart=1009

This, Florian, was a real good job, what you did.
Thank’s a lot.

Wisconsin. Grew up in Milwaukee. As in Fonzie. He was sort of like a cowboy. Ayyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy.

Now I live out in the hills with the farmers.

Georg, you’re most welcome.
By the way, Bernhard Schnelle was my teacher, for ‘History of Type’. He also gave us an introduction to hand composition that might have helped to spark my interest in typography. Here and there are a couple of photos of ‘his’ shop at HBK Braunschweig – though taken after he already had left.
