Pictogram for Gratis
I have to design a pictogram for a congress hotel catalog depicting free local phone calls.
¿How do you put free in a pictogram?

Let’s see...
a phone symbol with a tartan kind of background? hmm...
free > free like a bird... a cloud, a rainbow... hey, how about a bird? wings? phone calls > sound transmission > a songbird maybe?
Chirp chirp cheep,

Naw, they’d just think it took euros only.

Some times a word is worth a thousand pictures.

Isn’t just a phone enough? I assume that every hotel offers telephone service, but if not, then make a phone with a $ for those that charge, and a phone w/o for the free ones.

It depends on what language this will be in, and how tongue-in-cheek you want to get. Since English has no distinction between gratis and libre - both are “free” - you could depict a phone with wings flying out of a birdcage (that is if it is an English brochure and you are allowed to get a little cute with it).

Thanks a lot for the answers. We ended up using the pictogram of a telephone with a raised handset in an inviting way. I think this will do fine since the user is expected to be highly contextualized.

In case that graphic is being used elsewhere, you might want to change romm to room in the fourth down, left side.

Interesting, nice work, im currently looking at pictograms in my studies.
Question though, if you were allowed to use the letters; “24hr” in one icon, why just not use the word “free” above the phone... free phone.
Pictograms are freaking hard i reckon.

Actually, I find pictograms incredibly interesting, I see them as an important advancement into our visual language.
In theory they are basically like Hieroglyphics yet at the same time a product of modernism.

Yes, I get very entertained sketching pictograms for whatever is needed.
Well I didn’t use the words because I think that the context will help to clarify the pictogram.
