And could possibly spare a little time to take some screen shots for me :)
I can trade!

I have a 6.0.5 Mac SE on my desk if that's what you're after.

Cheers, Si

Hi Haley,

does this help, too?
The System 6 Heaven

I have only Intel macs right now so I can't get a classic system emulator :(

sii I'm going to send you an email.

vMac, the Mac Plus emulator, will run on Intel Macs.

Sii, does Microsoft hate Apple so much that they make you keep that around?

Like many long-time Mac lovers I believe it's all been downhill since OS6.

Cheers, Si

Actually its Vinnies old Mac that I took out of "storage" for the MC exhibit during TC - as seen here... http://www.flickr.com/photos/carlitas/1043378550/

I was able to get this running, sort of...

It's not as cool as the real hardware though...

So close, yet so far.

Does anyone know how i can make this thing type in Cairo?

I've kept my old Mac Plus, but it hasn't been booted up since 2002 when I made the illustration to this article:
http://www.shinntype.com/Writing/DeeperIn.pdf

You're welcome to come over and give it a try.

I have a Mac Plus that I can boot in either 3.2 or 6.0.8 - not sure if I can get screen shots into another machine right now, though, because I don't have the networking cables for it and my only other floppy drive is having some issues. I could give it a try, though.

In short what i'm looking for is a screen shot of the the cairo typeface so I can tell which glyph goes in what space.

It doesn't look like I can do actual screen grabs, but I can take some photos of the screen showing the positions of the glyphs if that will work. The glyphs are too big for the boxes in Key Caps - is that OK for a general idea of the positions or would it be better to type them into MacWrite or something?

Here is a map of Cairo I made using BitFonter and an old font suitcase in my archives labeled "New Fonts" from one of the early System releases:

Did I mention I never throw anything away?

Dear Mark,
You are my hero.

From Haley

I'm making a Cairo appreciation website and am including a true type version of the font - the only version you can find now is that horrible live traced version.

>I’m making a Cairo appreciation website

Sure it's not some wacky pyramid scheme?

ooohh I miss the humming of the fan!!!!!! my little SE baby.

Hi there, I have a Mac SE with OS 6.xx, and I have a question:
Where do I find new old 800 something kb floppy disks?
My plan is to find old software, like MacWrite, MacDraw etc to turn this baby to be a one and maybe only Museum of DTP software, in southwest Florida and show it in the printshop - hehe.

I think they still sell HD* floppy discs at office supply and computer stores (not Apple Stores, though). You should be able to format them on the SE as 800k disks. Later SE's had FDHD "superdrives," which work with the HD disks.

* HD as in "high density," not "high def."

Vince, is that the computer you used when you created Comic Sans?

Haley,

Why don't you just write Susan Kare and request the FOG file? Never hurts to ask . . . You may even get the back story on all the glyphs in the font!

Stuart :D

I actually already did contact her about the project when I was doing research awhile ago about the shareware status of the font. Wanted to make sure Apple wasn't going to try to sue me.

She never got back to me though as I'm sure she's super busy. I'm going to email her again when the website is finished. There's going to be a bit about her and the guy who designed Kid Pix.

"Where do I find new old 800 something kb floppy disks?"

Try www.floppydisk.com

Thanks for the info on the floppies.
