¿Nadie se atreve a luchar contra mí?
Churros y chicharrones son mi única debilidad. Pero son también mi fuerza. Ellos me hacen la grasa. ¡Ahora yo te aplaste!
29 Apr 2008 — 3:27pm
Nice, Randy! I think this battle is off to a very good start :)
29 Apr 2008 — 3:31pm
I think I need to lay off the Tapatio. BTW Rana Floja is sponsored by Google Language Tools.
29 Apr 2008 — 6:06pm
This will be fun! I'm going to do El Pollo Con Labios.
29 Apr 2008 — 6:13pm
I feel like I just fell off another planet and have no idea what is going on.

Chris: If I may suggest, your luchador alter-ego might just be: El Jugador de Palabras (The Punster - or some such thing). The rest of my taunting comments are indeed from another planet, no matter what language they're in. So you're right on there!
29 Apr 2008 — 10:10pm
Muy bueno tu español, Randy "Cojones" Jones!
And El Jugador de Palabras would be just right for Chris -- nice one! :-)

Rana Floja y su archi-némesis Silla Plegable. Ahora una parejas increíbles!
Labios y Pulpo tengan cuidado.
1 May 2008 — 3:30pm
Here is just the type part for now. The poster is to come. I thought I would design a blackletter typeface for this battle since it seems to be often used in Mexican street art.

Awesome! Your color choice helps make a strong counter punch. I had to resize the browser so to avoid both images on the same page at once... else seizures :-)

Ack, Dezcom beats El Pulpo to the punch!
Just wait till you see what I've been working on, Chris!

I have just been looking at the posters that Zara kindly posted as examples and realize that mine is too slick for the genre. Randy has done a masterful job of catching the flavor perfectly. I am assuming these posters are typically hand done and bargain printed. Unlike boxing or WWF posters where big money promoters were involved, Luchador seems more grassroots.
Great job, Randy!
Tezzu, What does Vetico mean? I seem to be the only person on this thread who does not speak Spanish :-)
ChrisL
2 May 2008 — 10:01am
Hey Chris, I don't know what vetico means in Spanish either,
it was just a quick visual pun (that apparently didn't work out that well :) )
Maybe this hint will help:

And anyway Chris your type looks great!
It'd be great to know more about the creative process that lead to that result.

"it was just a quick visual pun"
I of all people should have spotted that one!!! Good one, now that my brain got wrapped around it :-)

"It’d be great to know more about the creative process"
My concept for the typeface was to give it a bit of a razorwire flavor so I did it all with straight lines and allowed sharp protrusions where there were intersections but in a controlled manner so that the glyphs would interlock a bit. I limited the angles to one oblique of a bout 40 degrees and 90 degrees from it or the baseline. I may complete the typeface and see if there is a market for a modern blackletter perhaps with the rock band folks or some such thing.
The border is supposed to look like that tire chain stuff that is seen around license plates on cars.

Chiba,
I like your graffiti tagging lettering style. It really works for this subject.
ChrisL
2 May 2008 — 6:56pm
Hi Chris,
This kind of tag has its roots in blackletter (believe it or not) so I guess there is a connection.
I liked your techy blackletter approach and do think there is market for those nowadays. I've seen these around quite a bit, and think yours would work the same way:

Thanks! I really love the one from Underwear--that is a terrific take on a modern blackletter!

Héctor, I was waiting for you to weigh in, given your auténtico avatar.
Re: Mistico
I don't care if it's all scripted. The high flying luchadors are athletes in my book. That is amazing.
Chris, I think while my designs have a folky quality, they are too designerly to be auténtico. Too much white -- er yellow -- space. Real lucha posters seem to leave no breathing room at all. In that regard, I think El Pulpo has it perfect. Information overload with a gradient for good measure.
I had no idea El Santo was a typophile?
I think it's time for the mashup royal rumble battle poster between all the luchadors in the ring.
And what happened to the luchadora Chicken Lips? Too much testosterone here? Most luchadoras have enough testosterone to match the most macho honcho. (please don't hurt me -- I'm just following the smack talk instructions)

Aw, thanks, Rana! :-)
I have to say that the gradient was inspired by one of the posters Zara linked to... Usually I associate those kinds of gradients with certain old-time "vernacular" concert posters.
...my designs have a folky quality...
Definitely, Randy -- and you get lots of points for your great use of Spanish smack talk and excellent luchador names! "Silla Plegable" was espectacular!
And what happened to the luchadora Chicken Lips?
Yeah, I was wondering about her, too.

Yes Ricardo, the word here would be MAXIMALISM. :) dont know why I went minimalism :P

Do I spy a Tecate can no less? Bonus!
Chris, didn't notice the chains were part of the font. Cool. BTW, your biceps appear to have hookworms.

"your biceps appear to have hookworms."
Yes, but at least my naval still has a sunny disposition :-)

Randy,
Here is the typeface so far (I am calling it Deuterium).
I only have the lower case roughed out with just a few caps as needed for the battle. The last line is the dingbats which are kerened to eachother to set as chains.

@Chris: Nice to see your typeface going! I'm really curious to see how the other capitals will turn out.
@Russell: thanks!

Good work, Haley! Welcome to the death watch--see you Saturday with no holds barred! :-)
