I recently submitted my answers, but I had a few blanks and was wondering if anyone could help me figure them out.
7 Down: upright Italian (5) - - - - - ~Dave Williams answer below
9 Down: idiot sayings (10) - - - - - - - T - - ~I answer below.

Obviously, I have answers for the others if you're stuck. Also, if you want to try and figure out the puzzle yourself and don't want to know any answers then stop reading here and leave this post.
Thanks

7 down: tss...
16 across: I'd say 'bill' but with that 'a' would it come out as 'ball'? Could still be right.
13 May 2008 — 6:00am
16 Across: The A is actually in the 3rd position, the dashes didn't show up well. I'll fix that.
7 Down: I was thinking it might be "Latin", but wasn't sure.
I'm also thinking Unger's bird is referencing Johann Unger of Unger-Fractur, but I don't know what bird it's talking about.

40 across references the younger Unger, Gerard. The word, of course, is Swift.

Well now I just feel silly, I love Swift! I imagine that I'll probably feel like this for all the answers I missed. Thanks Dan.

46 down: tittle.
16 across: beak?

I think you might be right Dave. Tittle definitely, and Beak does fit for 16.
If Beak is right, then I think I figured out 9 Down: Dumb Quotes

Ah, very good. When I'm not here I'm on crossword sites. Never thought I'd see a crossword post here! Thought I'd mixed my browser tabs up for a moment... LOL.
7 down surely just "Roman", no? ... ooh, and how about "collisions"?

Man Dave, you're on a roll!
13 May 2008 — 8:02am
Could "upright Italian" be "Aldus"?
13 May 2008 — 8:07am
I say "Latin" Giving 10 Across - - T - - - S -
Dave says "Roman" Giving 10 Across - - M - - - S -
and Craig says "Aldus" Giving 10 Across - - D - - - S -
I originally thought 10 Across was Old Style which would work with Aldus, but doesn't work with Versal which I assumed was 2 Down (sorry, for the spoiler.)
13 May 2008 — 8:16am
Ah, got it!
ROMAN and HUMANIST
(I also had oldstyle originally, and was stumped on versal.)
13 May 2008 — 8:23am
Awesome! That does it for me. If anyone needs any answers, feel free to ask!

Loving this crossword, but I'm stuck on 4 down (type classification system) and 56 across (typography's 3rd colour). Any hints?
15 May 2008 — 6:40pm
56 Across is Red. 4 down is Vox.
15 May 2008 — 11:51pm
Ahh! I thought it was red, but I wasn't sure. Why red though? Thanks!
16 May 2008 — 5:35am
The 3 best colors to set type in are Black, White and Red.
16 May 2008 — 3:35pm
are u sure about that? i thought it was SET as in the "color" of a letter since it means the width of letters?
Red is just too common for me... even if its the color that is strong both on white and black ... i think SET defines the grayness of a text so makes it the third color of typography.
16 May 2008 — 4:01pm
My rebuttal: http://www.dynamicgraphics.com/dgm/Article/28599
Last paragraph:
"If you are considering a third color for typographic communication, think of red first."
6 Jun 2008 — 8:35pm
LOL, I didn't knew what to answer for 56, red, but I looked at the iLT site and this one, and well, they're using white, black and red, soooo I tried it and it worked.
BTW, what is 39 down "Southern state type"?
7 Jun 2008 — 6:09am
