I’m not certain, though I wouldn’t be surprised if it was hand-lettering.
A few years back I had the opportunity to repackage the book the “Anatomy of a Murder” movie was based on. At the time, a design with no resemblance to Saul Bass’ iconic poster was in place. I pushed to revert back to using Saul Bass’s iconic movie poster image on the cover. And when I needed to add the “#1 Bestseller” line I found the font Hatmaker to be the closest match I could find at the time. Not perfect—but a similar feel. (And just for for fun here is the package for the first edition of the book back in 1958)

’Hitchcock’ font is similar to ’The Man With The Golden Arm’ font, but not the same - go to this site for more info.

Henry Hughes created three fonts inspired by Saul Bass’s lettering back in 2002. His old website is defunct, but I found them here.

PPS, there’s a font called ’Joey’ that’s not a bad match for ’Anatomy..’, but I can’t for the life of me remember where I bought it from.

Karen,
Thanks for posting the old cover! It reminds me of my youth and how far we have come in this design business.
