Optical geometry test/game

Thought this would be an appropriate place to post this, as typographers seem to be pretty damned handy at judging shapes by eye.

Take caution though, as I tried to put a fist through my monitor trying to get a score below 2.4.

Got a 6.80. I think I’d get slightly better score if I knew that you had to make a straight line on the Midpoint test. That 36.1 hurt me.

Thanks, someonesplended! That’s a great test for the type designers and users.

I got a 3.69 and that’s with my messed up monitor that makes everything look like it has drop shadows and squiggles all over it.

It’s a signal interference thing. Neighbor is a HAM operator.

2.36 first try - would have been lower but a Wacom screw up (sometimes moves when I pick up the pen) screwed me on the convergence test.

Cool.

2.80 first time around. Kept on getting around 6 on the midpoint test, though. For some reason I really suck at that compared to everything else.

Man I suck. I got an 18 something. But to my benefit I accidently hit my pen to the tablet twice and got 500 scores both times.

Okay redeeming myself a little. 3.25 second time. I’m still not as skilled as you all.

Wow, this is great.
I just got 2.63, but I’ve got to admit it was my third try. The other two times I was, erm, distracted. At least this time I finished with a solid 0.0 in the last puzzle :-)

1.98. The weak spot for me is the parallelogram. I have a tendency to see it as a three-dimensional plane.

John Hudson

I have the same difficulty, Mark. My brain wants to impose perspective on the parallelogram. I also find that my success with the angle bisection depends very much on the orientation of the angle.

I think my skill at finding the center of the circle comes from FontLab’s lack of crosshairs on the scale tool. When I want to interactively scale a circle from the center, it’s usually too much trouble to set up guides to locate the center. I just eyeball it.

But Mark, when you select a circle, then double click to enter transform mode, and then hold down the shift-option keys and scale using the corner, doesn’t it scale from the center for you? Shift constrains the circle; option makes it operate from the center.

actually her score of 2.2 was for one individual task! There she was touting around the office at being better than me. Ha! bleedin’ cheek!

You know, as soon as I posted that, I was sure this would happen. But if I had known that trick, then I wouldn’t have done as well on the optical geometry test.

Thanks for the tip, Kent. I always forget about the transformation mode.

2.35 on first try. I seem to have the same trouble with parallelograms mentionned, but the most striking thing for me was that I was consistently picking a point to the right of the actual circle centre. I learn something new every day.

Oh, on one of the right angle tests, I got a perfect vertical, and had the easy task of drawing a perfect horizontal, hence the 0.0.

Hey this was fun! But one of the hardest parts is getting the mouse to move only one pixel at a time.

Your inaccuracy by category:

Parallelogram 0.0 3.2 1.4
Midpoint 2.0 4.5 1.4
Bisect angle 0.7 0.9 1.4
Triangle center 3.5 2.2 11.8
Circle center 2.2 1.0 4.1
Right angle 1.6 0.5 0.2
Convergence 1.0 1.4 2.8

Average error: 2.28 (lower is better)

nepenthe - It may help to adjust your mouse tracking settings. Also, I highly recommend a trackball for the most accuracy. Been using a Kensington Turbo or Expert Mouse for nearly 10 years now.

The weak spot for me is the parallelogram. I have a tendency to see it as a three-dimensional plane.

A workaround, instead of trying to get your brain to forget perspective, is to force your eye to alternate seeing the two possible 3-d readings (“ceiling” and “floor”). Split the difference and it should be right on.

Mark Simonson
13.Oct.2008 1.28pm

Yeah, I tried that, too. Seems like the only way I do better on the parallelograms is to make it look wrong. Still tricky. I’ve found that putting my hand over the ends of the lines helps in the angle bisecting test.

What did you use... Regular optical mouse, Wacom stylis, touch pad?

For some reason, the stylis was a lot less acurate. not much diffence between the mouse and touch pad.

1.92 first try.

I like the histogram they give you at the end.

Problem here though, the points you’re marking are sometimes between pixels and therefore impossible to match exactly.

It makes sense that the stylus would be less accurate, as releasing the pen from the tablet without moving it is well-nigh impossible.

1.42!

I realised that I was doing very badly on finding the halfway point of the line in part because my mouse pointer arrow was throwing me off, so I switched to a cross-hair pointer and did much better. I still can’t find the mid-point of a triangle though!
