To save space they should've switched to hexadecimal. That would have had the extra advantage of obscuring reality, allowing people to continue spending money they will never have.

Switching to £ would give the clock a longer life.
Perhaps the US should also go back to the old "British" way of counting large numbers where a billion is a million million (1,000,000,000,000) not a mere thousand million (1,000,000,000). That way the US national debt would only be $10.2 billion not $10.2 trillion.
