I saw matthew carter at my local walgreens.
i was wondering if anyone would be as excited as seeing him in chinatown in sf. heh. it's like seeing mary kate and ashley in disguise.. maybe not. anyways, is anyone else from typecon from sf? i'm usually locked up in a basement working.

On a related note, have any other TypeCon attendees been 'stopped in the street' while wearing their TypeCon T-shirts?
Apparently John Berry was accosted by a graphic designer on the streets of Seattle who'd heard of the event and wanted to know more.
Perhaps TypeCon is the Woodstock of typography?

That sort of happened to me wearing a kafiyyeh in Arizona once (in the early 90s). "What does that mean?" the waitress spurted as we were leaving, visibly contorting between the two pressures of "the customer is always right" and [manipulated] patriotism. These days I think I'd just get shot before even making it to the entrance. By the guy who cleans the toilets.

I saw Vernon Fisher picking his nose while on a morning walk.
30.Jul.2004 11.11am
I was on BART on the way to Richmond after the event to catch a train home to Sacramento and had a very pleasant conversation with a young woman who had just graduated from CCAC. She was leafing through the red Emigre specimen book so it was easy to tell.
30.Jul.2004 11.32am
hehe.. i got stopped on the BART too .. on the way home one nite. this girl Jenny (mosspink) stopped me cause i had my giant typecon bag . . i gave her a card, walked her to the apple store and that was it.
30.Jul.2004 11.55am
walked her to the apple store?
Computer or produce?

My neighbor thought the very same thing when I wore mine. I wonder if anyone with a Stereophile Magazine, Audiophilia or the World Federation of Hemophilia t-shirt runs into the same comprehension issues on the street. Sounds like something that better typography could address.

That would be such a great religious payback thing.

No.
It is something that better education must address.
A society where all -philes and ped-s are subject to public rage (in Britain, some doctors who had a sign saying "pediatrician" were almost lynched) has a serious problem. Ignorance can only be cured by carefully administered doses of knowledge.
Unfortunately, right-wing politicians don't seem to be in favour of education, thinking that the more stupid people are, the more likely they are to vote for them. Which says a lot about their self-esteem.

No, the more likely to vote, period.
Which says a lot about the disjoin between human nature and democracy.

We're wandering off-topic here (what would Matthew -- and Walgreens -- think about all this?) but:
Hrant, are you saying that you have to be stupid to vote at all in America? That's pretty extreme. I mean, it's the kind of assumption that also underlies fascism. But I guess that's not what you mean. What's the alternative? Better typography? Enlightened dictatorship? Marilyn Manson for president? I'm suddenly sorry that we did not get to talk politics when we met recently.

Hey Yves,
You forgot to mention that this was in the *sales* section, 30-50 percent off. That will give the people a better perspective of my hipness (and economic possibilities). I didn't find anything decent anyway.

I don't know but time ago in Japan, I found myself standing

He was eating "natto", fermented beans. More info at:

George,
You didn't read well! I replied to Yves's post saying that I (the acclaimed author in question) did not find anything to my no doubt highly sophisticated liking. That's what you get when you're looking for bargains.
Hey, what is this, fashion-file.dot.com?

Hey Segalini, scusi dottore,
Macchecazzo stai dicendo? Io non mangio roba schifosa!
I don't eat slimy food!
But as soon as somebody opens up a legitimate "typographers' recipes" thread (I'm sure there must have been some before) I can post some delicious suggestions.

Jan, I'd really much rather talk type anyway. Talking about good governmental structures is even more pointless than talking about true smallcaps or the benefits of hybrid numerals. So to spare people the aggravation (and myself the keystrokes) let me just point you to the one time I wasn't totally incoherent about the topic:
http://www.typophile.com/forums/messages/30/28515.html - Thursday, March 18, 2004, 3:19 pm
As for being "extreme", I guess it's a matter of viewpoint. To me the world is currently in an "extreme" state, there's no sign of possible improvement on the horizon, and gradual correction has become preposterously idealistic. Sometimes you have to destroy to rebuild properly.
> what would Matthew -- and Walgreens -- think about all this?
Most probably diametrically opposite things. Carter's "I am a communist" during his kaffeeklatsch at TypeCon98 is memorable - it could have been an auto-simplification (something I do a lot), but still.
Yves, a kaffiyyeh is apparently something you wear to signal that you want to kill innocent Americans. I don't want to kill Americans (even guilty ones), but I do own one: it's a black-and-white (the red-and-whites come from the badaween, I believe, and I consider classier), it's made in Syria, but it's one-sided, so not really the real thing. Not that I can wear it any more anyway.
BTW, Karen Huang occasionally does good food on her blog.

MC is definitely noticeable - tall and stately with gray ponytail.
I'm in Berkeley, David. Does that count?

earth would I wear such a thing.
