Typophile home page weirdness

Gus Winterbottom's picture

I first noticed this last night: in both IE7 and Firefox on Windows, the Hottest, Newest, and Hand Picked areas of the Flash box are just small red rectangles, and the text from the most recent post is taking up the whole screen. Anybody else seeing this?

Bendy's picture

Yes. I can't change my profile pic either. And uploading a pdf wasn't working properly yesterday either. Perhaps they're doing upgrades behind the scenes.

@Gus That looks like it is failing to grab the three post categories properly from the database. When it can't pull data, the flash player just leaves those little small red rectangles as it waits. Something might have been borked yesterday with the fixes to the search (or other bug fixings).

On my computer (Firefox on a Mac) i don't even get the three rectangles. I get everything except the rectangles and posts. There's that huge background quote (which currently featured your comment, aaronbell) and nothing else.

I saw nothing unusual in the last few days...! (Firefox-Mac)

aaronbell's picture

Yeah, the background pulls in the most recent quotes and overlays them with decreasing opacity. Rather pretty effect (even though the usage of flash & database calls causes safari to crash).

But yeah, I'm seeing it on ff and safari on the mac.

Oddly enough, the browser is getting back the XML from the server with the "hot," "newest" and "hand picked," but Flash isn't rendering them properly. Ah well, I'm sure the site admins will get around to fixing it.

Yep, we're aware, and on the case. Stay tuned...

Looks perfect in Opera on a Mac.

Safari 3.2.3. Like the [img: Untitled ... tag, though. Gives it all a professional feel.

I am using Safari v3.2.1 and am too having trouble with the welcome page.
But apparently it's a good thing for Typotheque's Nara. I wish the same trouble occurs again once I advertise my typeface here, ;-).

Just for completeness, this is the view from IE 7.

I've got all that, but one better. After the latest Apple update (Mon. 8th June) I get Chinese when I right click for 'back' above the first post, but normal English if I right click for 'back' below.

I like the interface and I hope it is back up and running soon. ...I just hope that some day Adobe will allow you to right click a link in flash to open it in new tab...

@Ryan: Amen!

Typophile home page weirdness fixed.

satya's picture

Thanks! It's all fine now!

Cristobal Henestrosa's picture

Fixed in Safari, but not in Firefox 3.0.10. (iMac G5.)

cuttlefish's picture

@Nick: That's not Chinese. Though why you'd be getting Japanese Flash plugin options I have no idea.

Cristobal: Might be a cache issue? It works fine in my Firefox (3.0.10,
PowerPC G5).

Cristobal Henestrosa's picture

Absolutely right, Nina. I just restarted it and it is fixed now. :P Thank you!

Oh, so much better…
