I always thought Erik could have sub'd in Kraftwerk. Now confirmed.

Solid as a tank!

Typefaces give us signals from erik spiekermann on Vimeo.

I think that link might be broken. It does not appear to do anything, but my browser has been misbehaving lately.

"Solid as a tank!"
…Roman inscriptions.

Typomania really lends itself to this kind of remixing… Priceless. :-D

After Effects.

Hobo for the French, that was an unorthodox choice. Amusing.

i think it’s Arnold Boecklin, not Hobo.

btw: i find it extremely annoying when the visuals just mirror the spoken text. so boring …

It's both -- Boecklin on Art Nouveau, Hobo on the Deux Chevaux).

oh yes, right! i wasn’t patient enough to reach the car section.

I'm so into this.

Is the voice from a film or something? Or recorded for the animation? I love Spiekermann on Helvetica, what a crazy man.

"I love words. They are my friends." Awesome.

The sound is from the Typomania video. A true Eighties trip :)

BTW, what's the font used in the beginning? That strange/po-mo-ish bracketed slab with the double storey "e"?

Fixed the link (had some bad markup) and embedded the Vimeo code (easy to do if you set "Input format" to "Full HTML" when creating your post.

Thanks altaira! Fantastic!

COOPER BLACK STRIKES BACK!

Ah yes, that looks like it. Thank you!

Edit: Ahum, I just realized the fonts used are listed in the credits… sorry. %-)

Hello fellow typophiles..
I have been a regular lurker on this site & have always enjoyed the lively debate & discussions; thanks for all the infos & news...
With the release of the mentioned video; I thought this could be a good occassion to finally come out of the bushes & present myself...
I hope you are enjoying the video & song; must say a great thanks to my friend Mike Croft for coming up with the music; atleast it gave us a good laugh making it...
Your comments on the fonts are very true; I had a bit of a hard time getting hold of the right fonts for each style & being on zero budget; I used alot of my own fonts designs... True that Hobo for the french was not ideal but I just could not get hold of a good version of the Metro font used in the original Tyopmania clip...
Feel free to give us some feedback & critics!

Michael, you probably didn't realize how appropriate that typeface actually is. Erik often greets me and other guys in the office with a "hey, big boy" when he comes to visit San Francisco. Not in the melodramatic girly tone most Americans use it but more like a matter-of-fact father: "how are things, son?" It's quite amusing.

Hi Stephen; thanks for that note; indeed that is a funny coincidence:)

Hey! I'm quite new here (actually just registered).
I like this video very much, also because it speaks as an confirmation of my graduation work, where i analyzed the relations between visual and sonic - on the example of expressive typography (related to music). You can see it here (sorry, only in Slovenian): http://www.mimikrija.si/tipoglasba/

Just wait for Erik's upcoming new (old) letterpress works :-)

Oh yes, this old letterpress was quite heavy. Any news about it, Erik?

maticL:

I love it! It gave me a burst of energy this (yawn) tired afternoon.

(and as someone with Slovenian roots, I wish I was knew more about my own language beyond 'Yak Shi Mash')

Best,
