Logo for a swedish theatre school for kids. The name translates as follows "Åboland" is the name of the county and "Teaterskola" means theatre school.
Not much intructions from the client. They want some sort of an emblem and that the school theme comes across.
Been working on a concept that brings out the theatre part, based on the theatre masks you usually see with theatre related things.
Gonna do some more school based scetches and work on an emblem.
Any feedback is much appreciated.

If the school is for kids, these masks seem a little too scary!
9 Dec 2009 — 2:47pm
That's a good point riccard. I like the direction of the first one as it's starting to look like sort of a badge/crest, but maybe soften the look of it a bit and make it a little more "kid friendly".
10 Dec 2009 — 1:09pm
yeah, good point. Gonna do some other concepts as well, client liked the direction of the two on the left. Theatre masks are a little too common though. Updates to come...

Hello,
Got a new version for this project.
Still sticking to the mask. A split mask that is supposed to represent the student outside the school (black side) and the student inside the school (orange side). I've put a house shape as nose and this is supposed to represent the school.
Tried using their colour suggestions as well, black and orange.
Feedback appreciated.

I still find it less playful than it would deserve.
About the house/school inside the mask, I would rather try to make a school-shaped mask.
3 Feb 2010 — 12:57pm
in fact...it's kinda creepy.
4 Feb 2010 — 12:09am
Creepy, yes.....but, the first thing I noticed was underpants. See it? The outline of the mouth is a pair of "tighty-whiteys" and the nose is a belt buckle (wrestler-style!)
Now, I can't see anything else. Sorry.
4 Feb 2010 — 7:36am
And the eyes are boxing gloves.
I like the type though :)

Now I'm seeing Lisa Simpson, with a skin pigment disorder, eating panties :)
Seriously though, Peter. Don't get discouraged! Can't you post some more renderings or other ideas?
Lycka till!
4 Feb 2010 — 9:46pm
Now all I can see is the underpants too :)
I think the whole mask idea is really interesting, just needs a bit of massaging to get it to a more friendly state.
5 Feb 2010 — 9:02am
Haha, the client also noticed the Simpsons connection. Pretty funny.
Yeah gonna scrap this version and do a new one. Gonna stick with the type and concept overall for now. Had some ideas on dance/body movement but it's hard to make not look like a dance school. They dp incorporate that stuff in their education though so it might be a way to go.
Will post something new next week
Thanks for the feedback so far.

Hello,
Took a break from this project because of school and now it's time to finish it.
This is the latest revision of the logo. An owl and a mask to represent the "normal" student and the "theatre" student. Thinking of making the mask in a "painted" feel maybe. Also trying to add some hair to represent the six years that the students are there. First idea was to use direct objects like a spotlight, pen, brush, ladder and so on but it didin't really work out. The objects become too small and detailed for it to work at small sizes. I am now trying a more abstract approach to the hair.
Any feedback appreciated

This looks good. I don't think it needs anything else. Don't try to cram too many elements into one logo.
Good job!

I think the eye on the right side could maybe be moved to the left a smidge and possibly made a little bit bigger. Other than that, I love the outcome. Maybe some downward serifs on the bar of the "T"s?
17 Aug 2010 — 2:09am
If you're going to add serifs to the 'T's, you should add them to the 'L's and maybe the 'E's and 'S's as well.

Thanks,
One thing that I still need is to represent creativity somehow. The hair would go in that direction and then I was thinking of making the mask with some sort of painted effect so that it's not so clean and tidy.
Been moving the mask eye back and forth so I'll probably modify it some more. I think at least I'll make it a little bigger.
Not going to add any serif to the type I think it would kill the contemporary feel that the type has. Already made some small changes from the original and I really like the original except that it was too thin.
Will post a new version soon.

Jättesnygt, Peter.
Yes, please don’t add any serifs, but do consider merging L and A! They’re only a hair apart, but the whitespace between them is gaping.
17 Aug 2010 — 10:30am
tackar,
yeah the LA merging could be nice. gonna try that and see how it looks.
19 Aug 2010 — 11:51am
Hello,
Made an updated version. Tried various combination with hair on the character but it didn't work out, just started looking silly.
This is an older idea that I had but realized now that it might be a better direction. I made the mask look "painted" which is supposed to symbolize creativity. I also noticed that it with a color scheme like this it adds a mysterious wuality to it which I quite like. And for some reason the owl looks a lot more curious and inexperienced while the mask looks more experienced and adult. I think this works quite well to represent the student and how they grow.
Also merged 'L' and 'A'
Any feedback apprecieted

Maybe try reflecting the hand-drawn quality of the mask in one of the words below.

Thanks,
The client didn't like this idea at all though so I have some new versions. Went back to the old version and modified that. I got 9 different versions of the symbol, mostly modifying the owl. The client likes numer 1, 4 and 7. Personally I like 7 the best and think this might be a more interesting approach. Also started to think that the separation line isn't neede but then a single colour version is going to be har to make.
Any feedback appreciated.

I like #1. The eye in the owl is perfect in that one — much more lively than the rest.
The theatrical mask side, however, still feels like it needs some drama. The small eye just feels a bit flat.
27 Aug 2010 — 11:23am
#1 is much more friendly than the rest, #4 is nice too but is similar to trip advisor's logo, which isn't that bad, but...
I would try to make the two sides "even", they don't have the same weight
31 Aug 2010 — 6:58pm
Thanks,
The client liked version 1 as well but also complained about the mask being a bit flat. Made some tweaks and added some stuff to the mask. Tried some other illustrations as well around the eye but it didn't work so well. Seems it's best when you keep it to a couple of lines. I sent these two to the client as well.
31 Aug 2010 — 9:02pm
I think the eye on the mask is out of place with the simple geometry of the rest of the logo. I'm also not sure about the brown on red.
Try making it even more geometric than your first version.
- Lex
1 Sep 2010 — 7:39am
Thanks,
I like the brown on orange, it's not completley red. Gonna try some more geometric shapes on the mask eye but that means it's pretty much gonna be round which I'm not so sure about. Will post some updates on the eye if I get som decent results.

1 Sep 2010 — 7:53am
Remember this should work without colour as well!
1 Sep 2010 — 8:17am
I guess this would be a more geometric eye but I'm not so sure it works. Tried adding a tuft of hair/feathers or whatever to the owl. We have a problem that the owl looks a little like a finish tv channel logo. Also made the symbol smaller, felt like it was too big for the type.
It should work fina in one colour. Just make the mask eye and eyebrows white.
All feedback appreciated.

I agree with Frode. It's the best version, stick with it!
1 Sep 2010 — 11:08pm
I like the way the nose area looks in the newest version (more of a symmetrical 'M' shape) but everything else about the version Frode likes works better. Try bringing the curve of the mask boundary a bit more to the right.
- Lex
1 Sep 2010 — 11:09pm
agree with frode. you got something good. stick with it.
2 Sep 2010 — 12:06am
I'm with Frode, too.
Be careful with the owl side, so that it doesn't look too much like the MTV3 logo.
2 Sep 2010 — 10:12am
yeah this is my problem http://www.mtv3.fi/logot/
That's why I changed the cut between the mask ang owl in order to try and make the owl look a bit different. But I think with the tuft of hair and a round curve it might work better. I dpn't really like the straight line through but it was too similar to MTV3 but with the hair added I don't think it will be such a problem anymore.
I already have a version with another curve just haven't posted it here yet, then add my new simpler eye and the tuft of hair on the owl. Also midified the colour slightly sicen it's supposed to be a dark orange but now it prob looks red to most ppl.
Gonna do some work on the website first though. Will post a new logo version later.
thanks for the feedback so far

Update,
Made a smoother curve that splits the owl and mask. Took back the basic mask eye that I had before but added details around the eye, tried keeping these simple as well. Added the tuft of hair in order to get away a bit from MTV3's logo. Adjusted the colours slightly as well.
Any feedback appreciated
thanks

5 Sep 2010 — 10:54pm
IMO, you’re definitely in the clear with regards to the MTV3 logo.
6 Sep 2010 — 9:46am
yeah I think so too.
I had to leave some kind of detail around the mask eye because without it I don't think it looks like a mask. Without the eybrow and stuff it creates a weird unbalance. Like in my first version of this the owl takes up way too much space while you barely notice the mask side.
6 Sep 2010 — 3:16pm
what about an owl mask?
6 Sep 2010 — 4:04pm
I think an owl mask would be too much owl. The client has a problem with owls for some reason, don't know why. Anyway I don't have time to re-draw antything anymore, it would take way too long. I have time for minor adjustments but that's about it.
20 Oct 2010 — 5:26pm
Aight, this is probably be the final version. Only made some small changes. Made the cut between the two parts simpler and modified the eye slightly. Website will be done soon as well.
Still appreciate some feedback if you have any to give.
Thanks
Peter
21 Oct 2010 — 1:23am
Peter, this is lovely, especially the typography - but I reckon you could enhance the mask feel of the right part.
If you look at a typical mask shape (like the venetian mask below) you'll see a much stronger 'eye hole' and curves
at the top (following the brow line) and bottom (making space for the nose).
Just my 2 öre, but maybe it helps.

Thanks,
I'm not gonna change the eye anymore. I actually had a version exactly like these eyes on the mask side but it came out a little alien like, didn't look right.
But the rounded part at the nose is interesting, gonna give that a go and see how it looks.
peter
21 Oct 2010 — 8:42am
Looking forward to it.
3 Nov 2010 — 10:06pm
meh, the rounded nose bit didn't work out so well. Would have to redraw the mask part for it to work and I don't have that much time left.
So the latest version will be the final one.
Website is almost done as well http://www.åts.fi some content still to come but otherwise done.
If anyone has any feedback to give on the site please do so.
Thanks
Peter
4 Nov 2010 — 1:04am
Peter, I know how it is - sometimes you just have to decide that it is finished.
The site looks great (what a wonderful montage for the header), my only concern is the plain text on the dashed background in the sidebar. Maybe a bolder weight could fix this?
5 Nov 2010 — 12:20pm
Thanks, yeah been modifying the sidebar for a while now, don't want it to stand out too much. Right now I kinda like the fact that you can't clearly see what it says in the headers of the sidebar. It feels defiant, like a teenager. I think it suits the site.
Probably gonna try and modify it some more though, still have to sort out the gallery as well.
