If you were asked to write a 'dictionary appropriate' definition of typography, what would you write?
Writing with type is the literal one (from the greek roots).
The art of putting words on a page purposefully to help the reader easily understand the context and content.
I'd say "words" are essential to typography but the "page" might not be. (Think of the typography used in an information kiosk or a business card.)
Yes, I wondered that as I wrote it. But I couldn't think of a more suitable word ;)
Possibly "The art of using words as a medium to help the reader easily understand the context and content."?
@Don McCahill: What is type then?
