Right, I'm certainly going to rationalize the design in my own manner, whatever that will be. I don't know what other versions (metal and digital) had in terms of motivations anyway.
The uneven-ness that I would like to avoid didn't stem from asymmetry

No, sorry, it's already been revived too often. ;-)

Maybe it's an auto-trace.

I guess normally you want to diverge from all existing revivals, not just to avoid ethical issues, but also to deliver something more useful. The main things I think you should do are: make something that evokes "rationalist" royal France; make an italic that strikes a good balance between subservience, character and the rationalist ideology.
Tiffany, Beauty: I think it's essentially undefinable. It's a convoluted, dynamic mix of nature and nurture - best pondered lightly.

to return the situation,
Hrant say:

Its also mostly true for Typefaces and why some people are in love with particular faces that others can found the same faces really boring.
About the RdR, I'm not sure if you could do any revival (mean publishing), its still proprietary typeface from IN and the small serif on the "l" prove the origin?

This is an interesting question. I'd discuss the ramifications of it with them should I ever get that far.

Dan, going through the Javal book again I found an image which contains the only RdR lc "g" drawing I've seen:
If you'd like a 600dpi version let me know.

hrant: if I could have the 's' at 600 dpi, that would be sweet.
I don't remember whether it's been posted in this thread or not, but Knuth has a reference to Andr

hrant: actually, never mind on the scanning. I have a good reproduction in my "Alphabets Classiques" book published by L'Aventurine.

What about totally ignoring the revival and find your own way to rationalize the design? I would think the reason for the uneven color is due to the grid they used.
How can I put this ... a beautiful woman is beautiful because of her assymetry ... because everything doesn't measure evenly ... she is "optically" beautiful ... but not "symmetrically" perfect. Does that make sense?
