Can it be estimated how many fonts (families) exist at the moment? I need that number for an article and don't want to be miles off :) Thx!
Families : 154,322
Fonts : 265,978
Is my question that funny? Couldn't you tell "more than 150,000" or "almost 200,000" and still be correct? I was hoping for that sort of number. Apologies if I didn't make that clear. Thanks.
The question isn't funny, but Simon's answer was.
I don't think anyone has any idea how many fonts there are out there. Yo might be able to get a handle on the number of commercial fonts available, but it might be near impossible to figure out how many free fonts are out there.
OK, so what about commercial fonts or anything that can be estimated? Thanks.
The home page on the old myfonts.com site says their current offerings number 79,465, so Simon's answer probably isn't that far off, if you consider the tens--if not hundreds--of thousands of freeware fonts AND fonts which myfonts.com isn't authorized to distribute.
So if I say "over 100,000" I should be on a safe side, right? Cheers!
Over "100,000 fonts" is a stock, safe answer. But feel free to quote my estimates if you like.
"According to Simon Daniels..."
Why just not saying some thing generic as "tens, if not hundreds, of thousands", I cann't see what an exact number, even if an estimation, is useful for.
billions and billions
"... As we are speaking, yet even more are added every single day ...", just to put a dramatic ring to it.
And to think, in 1984, Apple thought 256 unique font ID's for the Mac were enough. That didn't last very long.
And in 1993 Adobe figured 1000 000 was enough, when they gave me 100 of their PS1 unique ID numbers. Looking windward.
Can I add one in 3 weeks and another in a month and a half? :-)

Only if you let sii know (or perhaps you were asking his permission?) How else is he supposed to keep the number bang up to date?
Can we sneak a peek, Michael?
>Only if you let sii know
Don't worry, I know where all the fonts are...
A bit left to go on this one!
Simondo the Omniscient? When you squint that photo looks like a hideous electro duck-billed dinosaur's head. Who are you four minions?
Michael, very cool. I just wouldn't know where to begin with this type of design!
@sii - I thought it was the font DESIGNERS that were the mutants ;-P
@Michael - Excited to see the rest!
>Simondo the Omniscient? When you squint that photo looks like a hideous electro duck-billed dinosaur's head.
Nick, details here... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cerebro
>Who are you four minions?
Minions, the Adobe font team of course. :-)
Nick... it is extrapolated from The Legacy Card Logo on my site www.typerror.com under lettering. The logo was straight out of the pen. Most of my fonts are... and it all stems from "handwriting." :-)
Aha, Simondo, a test...tell me a bit about my new font and when it's due for release. This will be interesting.
Michael, your website is also very cool, just like your new font. Who/where is your 'banal sans' quotation from?
>Aha, Simondo, a test...tell me a bit about my new font and when it's due for release. This will be interesting.
Give me a few days. “Someone” spilt a bottle of Belgian ale in the device, and it needs steam cleaning.
It occurs to me that I might be violating a trademark by using the name 'Simondo' in this thread.
All characters appearing in this work are fictitious. Any resemblance to real persons, living or dead, is purely coincidental.
>>Give me a few days.
If you do come back with some real concrete info about my font then I seriously take my hat off to you, that will be impressive.
I think you mean "Simeone".
