Specifically relating to typography (hand-drawn scripts)—though I'd be open to any broader suggestions as well—I'm looking for something that fits the young teenage girl demographic without having to give up some good design principles. Those two often seem to be at odds with each other, but if you know of anything that may help me collect some helpful inspiration I'd appreciate it. Thanks.

I tried to ask the resident teenager about her favourite typeface, and her reply was "something simple", which I take being basic sans.

Mili,
I think you have been a good influence on her ;-)

Poor thing, I put her off of some font choices for a school project some years ago…
I just showed her some fonts, and Meta, Futura and Bauhaus got thumbs up, no to scripts, serifs or black letter. Avant Garde was so-so. My "little" girl is 14 years old.
She said she likes "round" letters".

I'd start by checking out magazines and websites that are popular with girls that age.

I went to school in Olympia
Baby, baby, baby, baby
And everyone's the same
And so are you in Olympia
Won't you please make me real, make me sick
Make me real, make it stick
Make me real
Do it for the kids some more

thanks for the input.
the main font is a simple sans, but the accent type does need to be a script.
We'll probably will end up using custom hand-lettering, but am still trying to find the right person for the job. Jessica Hische is one designer that is really standing out. Or possibly someone like a Alejandro Paul.
Here's a sample of Jessica Hische's work that is starting to get at the right direction…
