Who is going to TypeCon 2011?

ebensorkin's picture

Who is going to TypeCon 2011 in New Orleans?

And for bonus points: if not, which ones might you be going to instead, ATypI? TypeTalks? TypoBerlin? TypoLondon? others?

BrettR's picture

I wish I could, but sadly, I live up in Canada and my passport is up for renewal.

I wonder if it will drop by Canada anytime soon?

ebensorkin's picture

A good question!

hrant's picture

I'm 90% for TC.

I plan to be there.

I am going to NO. Ready for the food.

Mark Simonson's picture

I'll be there.

John Hudson's picture

I plan to be there.

William Berkson's picture

I'll be there. On the program talking about "The Great Readability Scandal". A splendid time is guaranteed for all :)

Not me.

New Orleans in the summer?

No ATypI in Iceland either. After that snore in Dublin I don't think I can take it.

Diner's picture

Font Bro Mike and I will be in attendance . . .

russellm's picture

it is my plan to be there.

or to be square.

traviskochel's picture

I'll be there. Looking forward to finally making it to TypeCon.

Thomas Phinney's picture

I'll be there.

James, do you mind if we start calling you Mikey? :) ("Let's try Mikey! He hates everything!")

Cheers,

ATypI's Type 87 was nice, so was Type 90. I thought Lyon worked out well as did ATypI in San Francisco.

Boston, not so much, Tufte's keynote speech was too pompous for me, and the hotel bar closed too early. TypeCon in Toronto, Minneapolis, and New York were good. TypeCon Boston was OK except for the 10,000 hours devoted to Dwiggens. TypeCon San Francisco couldn't compete with the city so I have no opinion other than it was nice to see so much of San Francisco.

I stayed in a great hotel in Dublin, but I just can shake the memory of a presenter sitting down behind laptop head literally in hand apologizing for not being able to find his notes while he mumbled on. I remember there being a lot of that. But hey, I got to drink where Bono hangs out.

I’ll also be in New Orleans … my ninth TypeCon. Yikes.

Corey Holms's picture

I'll definitely be there. I've never been to New Orleans before and am really looking forward to it.

hrant's picture

I've been there once (in the late 90s). It's like a foreign country. Definitely worth it!

hhp

Corey Holms's picture

That's kind of what I'm hoping for. I think I'll be spending a lot of time looking through the camera viewfinder.
Hope you can make it Hrant.

Si_Daniels's picture

I'll be there and the family is coming along too.

ebensorkin's picture

I am glad so many of you will be there!

I am now officially booked as well. I just need flights now and all will be well! Well, not all.

I need some up to date info on the state of the cuisine... I had some genuinely amazing food at ATypI in Mexico. This could be amazing as well!

William Berkson's picture

The last time I was in New Orleans, I arrived by canoe after paddling a thousand miles down the lower Mississippi with my brother in the summer of 1962. I remember New Orleans like a dream, a good one, and am eager to experience again the jazz, the food, the attitude of "let's enjoy!"

Ale Paul's picture

Eben, let's do a list. I can not wait for a tourtle soup and the creole food.

hrant's picture

I remember when I asked the hotel bellboy "Are there any good restaurants here?" he got visibly offended and delivered an impassioned 5-minute infomercial! To say that they care about their grub would be the understatement of the century. And it might finally be TypeCon's answer to ATypI-Lyon (although sadly I wasn't at that one).

We have an official NOLA foodie putting together this year’s TypeCon Restaurant Guide. Hopefully, I’ll be able to post some preview eats on the TypeCon site within the next week or so.

Why would anyone register for a conference that has not published its program yet?

hrant's picture

The usual reason most people do most things: faith.

I will instead be attending a memorial service for my wife's mother in Pittsburgh. Perhaps next year will work out.

eliason's picture

Sad for me to say I can't make it this year.

John Hudson's picture

Why would anyone register for a conference that has not published its program yet?

In my case, because the programme is a relatively small part of the attraction. I go to TypeCon for a variety of reasons, a big one of which is the opportunity to see friends and talk with colleagues; regarding which, I miss seeing you James, and am hoping to find an excuse to get to New York again.

TypeCon have published a list of speakers, and frankly I'd go just for the opportunity to hang out with Ed Benguiat again.

…am hoping to find an excuse to get to New York again.

Type Masters week in June!

.00's picture

The TDC also has a Type Tech weekend seminar tentatively planned for October 21-23.

And you're right John, hanging out with Ed is worth going to any conference.

John Hudson's picture

Alas, October is booked for me this year, but I may be going to the Boston area in November, in which case I might swing by New York.

JM>...and the hotel bar closed too early.

This "bar" will be open for as long as you can carry a drink around your neck

JM> Why would anyone register for a conference that has not published its program yet?

With no offense to the program, the local food.

The shrimp at Pascal Manale contains important brain nutrients for small font design, CSS font stacks are based on the sandwiches at Napoleon House... and the pastry-encased, bacon and oysters poached in absinthe at Commander's Palace are reputed to assist in the divining of proper kerning classes. We'll see.

.00's picture

Thank you so much for clearing this up for me.

See you there.

Everything John said. Plus, I'm speaking at the conference.

I am ashamed and depressed to say I won't be there because it's in the middle of a trip to Stockholm and Amsterdam. This will be my first missed TypeCon in ten years.

I'll be arriving on Thursday (driving from St. Louis) just in time to get to Ed Benguiat's keynote.

Looking forward to meeting folks.

Won't be the same without you Chris!

I'm also sad to report that I won't be able to make it after all. I'll miss you guys and gals.

I'm so upset. New Orleans is just a few hours away, I was planning to go, but it was too short notice. Maybe it'll be in Austin next year? :D

Té Rowan's picture

You won't see me. I'm on an island. Walking to New Orleans would take too much time.

Té: LOL!!! I see you are a Fats Domino fan ;-)

That's what seaplanes are for. Mine departs at 4:50 this afternoon. Louisiana ho!
