ATypI's Type 87 was nice, so was Type 90. I thought Lyon worked out well as did ATypI in San Francisco.
Boston, not so much, Tufte's keynote speech was too pompous for me, and the hotel bar closed too early. TypeCon in Toronto, Minneapolis, and New York were good. TypeCon Boston was OK except for the 10,000 hours devoted to Dwiggens. TypeCon San Francisco couldn't compete with the city so I have no opinion other than it was nice to see so much of San Francisco.
I stayed in a great hotel in Dublin, but I just can shake the memory of a presenter sitting down behind laptop head literally in hand apologizing for not being able to find his notes while he mumbled on. I remember there being a lot of that. But hey, I got to drink where Bono hangs out.
The last time I was in New Orleans, I arrived by canoe after paddling a thousand miles down the lower Mississippi with my brother in the summer of 1962. I remember New Orleans like a dream, a good one, and am eager to experience again the jazz, the food, the attitude of "let's enjoy!"
I remember when I asked the hotel bellboy "Are there any good restaurants here?" he got visibly offended and delivered an impassioned 5-minute infomercial! To say that they care about their grub would be the understatement of the century. And it might finally be TypeCon's answer to ATypI-Lyon (although sadly I wasn't at that one).
We have an official NOLA foodie putting together this year’s TypeCon Restaurant Guide. Hopefully, I’ll be able to post some preview eats on the TypeCon site within the next week or so.
Why would anyone register for a conference that has not published its program yet?
In my case, because the programme is a relatively small part of the attraction. I go to TypeCon for a variety of reasons, a big one of which is the opportunity to see friends and talk with colleagues; regarding which, I miss seeing you James, and am hoping to find an excuse to get to New York again.
TypeCon have published a list of speakers, and frankly I'd go just for the opportunity to hang out with Ed Benguiat again.
This "bar" will be open for as long as you can carry a drink around your neck
JM> Why would anyone register for a conference that has not published its program yet?
With no offense to the program, the local food.
The shrimp at Pascal Manale contains important brain nutrients for small font design, CSS font stacks are based on the sandwiches at Napoleon House... and the pastry-encased, bacon and oysters poached in absinthe at Commander's Palace are reputed to assist in the divining of proper kerning classes. We'll see.
I am ashamed and depressed to say I won't be there because it's in the middle of a trip to Stockholm and Amsterdam. This will be my first missed TypeCon in ten years.

We will be at TypeCon 2011: Surge to speak about Gen Y. Antrepo's Executive Art Director and Co-founder Mehmet Gozetlik will present some stories from the base of Antrepo.

I wish I could, but sadly, I live up in Canada and my passport is up for renewal.
I wonder if it will drop by Canada anytime soon?

Not me.
New Orleans in the summer?
No ATypI in Iceland either. After that snore in Dublin I don't think I can take it.

Font Bro Mike and I will be in attendance . . .
18 May 2011 — 6:48pm

I’ll also be in New Orleans … my ninth TypeCon. Yikes.

I'll definitely be there. I've never been to New Orleans before and am really looking forward to it.
19 May 2011 — 6:58pm
I've been there once (in the late 90s). It's like a foreign country. Definitely worth it!

I'll be there and the family is coming along too.

I am glad so many of you will be there!
I am now officially booked as well. I just need flights now and all will be well! Well, not all.
I need some up to date info on the state of the cuisine... I had some genuinely amazing food at ATypI in Mexico. This could be amazing as well!

The TDC also has a Type Tech weekend seminar tentatively planned for October 21-23.
And you're right John, hanging out with Ed is worth going to any conference.

Alas, October is booked for me this year, but I may be going to the Boston area in November, in which case I might swing by New York.
