This is a photo taken from an art piece by John Baldessari seen at MOCA in Los Angeles. Obviously this is hand painted, but I am hoping someone can ID the source font.

I doubt that this was done from a font. Look at the line endings on the various T's, for example. Even if a font had been involved, some characters would appear to be updside down—the I, N, and S.

Yeah I agree that the letters have some significant variation, and I see what you mean about the upside down characters. Though it may not be the most accurate rendering, I still feel like there's a reasonable chance an original typeface was at the very least referenced here.
